Mission Statement: The mission of the Haywood Academic and Justice Academy is to help all students learn and improve their talents and capabilities so they will develop into productive and successful citizens; therefore the students will become learners for life.

Vision: The vision of the Haywood Academic and Justice Academy is to provide students with the opportunity to develop skills for living and participating in a democratic society. As an educational institution, we seek to foster an environment in which each student is afforded a variety of experiences. The Haywood Academic and Justice Academy seeks to challenge each student as an individual on his or her own level as a means of working toward this goal. It is our ideal that each student develop a spirit of inquiry and a respect for knowledge, and that he or she be taught to think logically, independently and creatively.

Alternative Learning Center
Mary C. Hood, Director of Alternative Education

A new day at ALC …

The Alternative Learning Center (ALC) is designed to promote education by motivating students to learn by placing emphasis on each educational component for a life-long learning experience. The ALC will focus on the whole child, by educating each individual student academically, socially, mentally, emotionally, and physically. Each student will be provided academic course work that is geared to individual need, including schedule coursework from his or her home school and electives. Additionally, therapeutic services will be provided to focus on social, behavior and emotional problems that are barriers to academic learning.

The students will have an Individual Student Learning Plan (ISLP). The plan will engage and challenge the student while also addressing the academic, behavioral, life skills, social skills, service coordination, transitional and vocational needs of the participant. The program will serve students in grades 7 through 12 and adults

The center is also the site for the Adult Basic Education Program.

Alternative Learning Center welcomes guests to open house

Alternative Learning Center Director Mary Hood (right) welcomed guests to the center’s open house in August, giving them a tour of the newly renovated former Justice Academy.
