East Side Physical Education

My goal for the year in Physical Education is for all of the third- and
fourth-grade
classes to participate in our programs. In my seven years of teaching and
coaching, I have witnessed teachers throwing the balls out and letting the
best athletes play. My goal at East Side is for all the 500-plus students to
learn games and exercise that they can use for a lifetime. This will enable
all students, on all skills levels to participate and keep their body in
good shape.
Examples:
1.) Jumping Jacks
2.) Push-ups
3.) Set-ups
4.) Knee bends
5.) Arm-Circles
6.) Relays
7.) Wall Climbing
8.) Sharks in Water
9.) Free Throw Shooting
10.)Jogging

East Side Library
In the Library we have just concluded our book fair. Our students enjoyed
selecting from a variety of books and educational activities. We have
also been working on different genres. Our concentration on fiction will
include: legends, fables, myth, fairy tales, and folk tales.
Concentration on nonfiction will include: autobiography, biography, and
informational articles. Each genre concludes with a video from
"Learn360.com, or "Unitedstreaming," which correlates with the genre.
Also, coming soon we will be doing a scavenger hunt using reference
materials.

East Side Computer Lab
In the computer lab, Successmaker is the program that is used for daily
instruction and reinforcement of skills that are taught in the classroom
The Successmaker program is an innovative, balanced educational program,
which incorporates curriculum, management and assessment into a powerful,
results-driven learning system. The Successmaker courseware suite offers
hours of interactive learning activities in reading, language, arts,
mathematics and ESL bilingual instruction. Our lab classes focus on reading
and math only.
In addition to this, the computer lab is opened Monday through Thursday for
a Math Camp from 3:00-4:00 p.m. The students use the websites Study
Island.com and Education City.com to improve their math skills. The Math
Camp started October 27 and will end April 2. Math Camp students are really
excited to use these websites!

East Side Art Classes
Art classes at East Side are designed to be studio art oriented. I cover
the elements and principles of art through discussion and application on
projects as they are being completed. The students are introduced to a
variety of different mediums and become proficient at using them in some
instances and merely better acquainted with them in others. All students are
exposed to Art History in general terms, but some art periods are covered in
more depth than others.
I specifically teach Tennessee performance standards for visual arts, and
many lessons are related to skills required for T-Cap. I work in conjunction
with the classroom teachers on these skills when possible. In many cases,
classroom knowledge is a big part in the development of my lessons.
Last year a student art exhibit was provided for the parent’s to view the
children’s artwork. This year, in conjunction with National Art Month, I am
working with our music teacher to organize a parent’s art night at our
school. We are planning activities that will take place throughout the month
of March.

East Side Music Classes
The music classes for East Side students have focused on learning the
basic elements of music and then creating their own music in our centers
around the room.
They’ve also focused on learning about the style of music called Jazz and
some of the important Jazz musicians. In March, we will be hosting
“Exploring the Arts.” On this night, students and parents can work together
to create their own music as well as many other activities
