East Side Elementary Statistics
and History
Student Characteristics
East Side has an enrollment of 543 students, with 273 in the third grade and 255
in the fourth grade. The student body has 175 white students, 335 black students
and 33 Hispanic students. East Side Elementary has 258 females and 285 males
enrolled. Fifty-five students currently receive services for special education.
Three are served under mentally retarded. Three students are developmentally
delayed and four are functionally delayed. Three students receive services for
language impaired and three for health impaired. Twelve students are served in
Speech. Twenty-four students are served under Learning Disability. Two students
are autistic and one requires visual services. Each group of students represents
less than one percent of our population. Seven students are considered as having
Limited English Proficiency (LEP). At the present time, East Side Elementary has
no migratory students. In the past, East Side has enrolled 3 children who were
victims of Hurricane Katrina, but those students are now gone. We do not house
preschool students. A feeder school has 220 preschoolers who will come to us in
the third grade. The school year is 180 days and the hours of instruction are
from 8:00-3:00. Students arrive at school as early as 7:00 a.m. and are offered
after-school activities until 4:00 p.m. Both breakfast and lunch are served
without charge to all students due to the free lunch rate (Title I school). The
2006-2007 attendance rate was 95.6 percent and East Side met the AYP target in
2007-08. Three students were retained at East Side Elementary School for the
2007-2008 school year. The school enrollment is generally stable and changes
little during the school year. In the year 2006-07, fifty students transferred
out of our school and forty-nine students transferred in to our school. This
number includes those who transferred on the first day of school. Dropout rate,
graduation rate and post-graduate employment do not apply to our school due to
the age of the student body. Student attitudes and perceptual data cannot be
supplied due to the age of our students and the reliability. CTE competencies do
not apply to our school.
Staff Characteristics
East Side has a full-time professional staff consisting of 25 classroom
teachers, 3 special education teachers, five auxiliary teachers, a guidance
counselor, and two administrators. Administrators are Mrs. Tammie Canada,
Principal, and Mrs. Yvette Blue, Assistant Principal. Current administration has
been here four years. All third and fourth grade classes are self-contained
classrooms. The part-time professional staff consists of a speech therapist, an
ESL teacher, and two teachers for the gifted. The system-wide speech therapist
provides services for language, speech and hearing impaired students an average
of twice weekly. A part-time ESL teacher (in conjunction with a bilingual
teacher assistant) assists students from our Hispanic population. A school nurse
is also available during school hours. Two tutors are usually hired for the
spring semester to help at-risk students. The professional teaching staff
consists of 37 females and 1 male, 39 percent of whom are African American, and
61 percent of whom are Caucasian. All professional personnel are certified in
their area. Three teachers are currently certified under permits and are working
toward highly qualified status. All other teachers meet the highly qualified
requirement by No Child Left Behind (NCLB). The average number of years of
experience for certified personnel is thirteen years. Sixteen faculty members
hold a Masters Degree with six of those holding a Masters plus 45 hours. One
teacher holds a doctorate degree. One teacher is Level III Career Ladder.
Teachers have gained 58% of their experience at East Side. Our school system was
reconfigured several years ago and many teachers changed buildings. Otherwise,
our longevity would be higher. Teachers have opportunities to show leadership in
our school. Various ways are through Leadership Haywood County, Teacher of the
Year, Balanced Literacy Task Force, Committee Chairs, Curriculum Facilitators,
Textbook Adoption, SIP Chairs, Leadership Team and Reading Coach. The school
system recruits new teachers from area colleges and universities.
Representatives travel and promote the school system. Sixteen teacher
assistants, two secretaries, two custodians, and the cafeteria staff also
contribute to the efficient operation of the school. All teacher assistants meet
the state’s criteria for highly qualified status. Teachers at East Side are
constantly striving to improve their level of instruction. All teachers attend
faculty meetings twice a month to accomplish this. Classroom teachers also have
collaborative meetings once a week to discuss instructional decisions and
strategies. All new teachers attend further meetings with the school’s assistant
principal in order to help them through the first year of teaching. The district
instructional supervisor also meets with new teachers monthly to support them
and supplies them with a mentor teacher. The mentor teacher is given training
and guidelines to help meet their needs. Discipline is a concern of most
teachers in the building as reflected on the teacher survey. As a result of the
concern for discipline, East Side has created and implemented a school-wide
discipline policy. This plan has reduced discipline referrals. Referrals were
down from 736 in 2006 to 649 in 2007. The referrals have continued to decline to
517 in 2008. Classroom disruption is still an area of concern. Disrespect has
shown improvement. Most discipline is handled in school; however, in cases of
repeated offenses, suspension is mandated. East Side has been given support from
school district personnel to complete this school improvement plan. The
Tennessee Department of Education staff has provided assistance as well as
monitoring of the plan.
School Characteristics
East Side Elementary School was built in 1963. Additions to the original
building have been made over the years, most recently in 1995, when a gymnasium,
stage, offices, storage space and six classrooms were added. The school has had
various grade configurations and is presently a third and fourth grade school,
serving all children in the county in these grades. The school itself has 34
classrooms, a fully equipped library, two computer labs, two classroom trailers,
a cafeteria, and a gym. East Side currently has 10 fourth grade and 14 third
grade classes, with class sizes ranging from 19 to 26 students. East Side added
a second computer lab for teacher and classroom use through a technology grant
in 2005. The House of Representatives awarded The Healthier US School Challenge
Award to East Side for making healthier choices available to students during
lunch. The school has also provided healthier choices during snack purchases to
meet new guidelines. Due to being a third and fourth grade school, East Side has
several areas that are not applicable. IB/Classes, Dual Enrollment Classes and
drug, alcohol, or tobacco incidents or arrests do not apply to our school. East
Side is monitored by the fire marshal every year. School Plant Environment
Surveys are also done by the Health Department to ensure that we have a safe
school for our students. School Safety Surveys are done monthly by the
administration to maintain a safe environment. Work orders are filed with the
central office personnel in order to expedite repairs.
