Gail Wade, a native of Georgia, holds a bachelor of science
degree in political science from Tennessee State University in
Nashville, Tenn., a master’s degree in guidance and counseling and
an Ed.S degree in curriculum and supervision. She has either
taught or been an administrator on all levels of education and is
currently principal at the Haywood Academic and Justice Academy
for students 7th through 12th grades who have been expelled from
their regular school setting. She has seven teachers at the
academy. She and her husband, Travis, have three daughters.
Mission Statement: The mission of the Haywood Academic and
Justice Academy is to help all students learn and improve their
talents and capabilities so they will develop into productive and
successful citizens; therefore the students will become learners
for life.
Vision: The vision of the Haywood Academic and Justice
Academy is to provide students with the opportunity to develop
skills for living and participating in a democratic society. As an
educational institution, we seek to foster an environment in which
each student is afforded a variety of experiences. The Haywood
Academic and Justice Academy seeks to challenge each student as an
individual on his or her own level as a means of working toward
this goal. It is our ideal that each student develop a spirit of
inquiry and a respect for knowledge, and that he or she be taught
to think logically, independently and creatively.

Leadership class visits schools

Haywood County Education Day, held on February 12,
is in conjunction with the Haywood County Chamber of Commerce's
Leadership Program. The leadership class began their day by
viewing the Principals' Exhibition in the back corridor of the
Haywood Board of Education office, followed by greetings from
members of the District Senior Staff and school overviews led by
each HCS principal.
The Leadership Class then visited Sunny Hill, East
Side, HHS Business and Career and Tech Departments, Whiteville
Technology Center Brownsville Site, and the Haywood County
Academic and Justice Academy. Lastly, the class spent time in
discussion with School Superintendent, Marlon King. Leadership
Board member hosts fo the day were Yvette Blue, Asst. Principal,
East Side and Janet Ward, Account Manager, Lasco Fittings.
Leadership Board Chairman, Jo Matherne was also in attendance.

Brett Grant named Justice Academy Teacher of the
Year

Brett Grant
Brett Grant, who teaches biology, world history, American history
and general science at the Haywood County Schools Academic and
Justice Academy, was selected by his peers as the Teacher of the
Year.
He has been teaching for 10 years, three of them in Haywood
County. He is a graduate of the University of Tennessee-Martin and
holds a bachelor of science degree in health and human
performance.
“I became a teacher to try and help students of all backgrounds
better themselves through education and become productive members
of society,” Mr. Grant said.
