A native of Brownsville, Dontye Bradford is a Haywood High School
graduate. She earned an undergraduate degree in elementary
education from Lane College and graduate degrees in curriculum and
instruction and in administration and supervision from the
University of Memphis. She was a teacher at East Side Elementary
for 16 years before moving to Haywood Junior High as assistant
principal. Mrs. Bradford is in her third year as principal of HJH
after serving eight years as assistant. She has a son and is the
widow of the late Arnell Bradford. She has served on the
Brownsville-Haywood County Chamber of Commerce Education Committee
and is an avid sports fan.

Joining the
staff in the 2006-2007 school year as assistant principal and
athletic director at
Haywood
Junior High School
is Don Sims. Mr. Sims is a 1975 graduate of the Department of
Defense High School in Heidelberg, Germany, where his father was
stationed with the U. S. Army. He attended the University of
Illinois and worked part-time for Wal-Mart before opting to delay
his college education in favor of a 20-year career in retail sales
and management with Wal-Mart. Starting as a part-time employee, he
worked his way up to SuperCenter manager before retiring. He then
pursued his desire for a college education and earned a bachelor
of science degree in education from the University of
Tennessee-Martin. He taught middle school science and math in the
Crockett County School System for three years and completed a
master of science degree in education supervision this year. He
has been married to his wife, Jennifer, for 25 years, and they
have twin daughters, Jessica and Leighanna, who are sophomores at
the University of Tennessee-Martin.
Mission Statement: The mission of the faculty and staff of
Haywood Junior High School is to instill in our students a
lifelong desire for learning and to equip them with the necessary
academic, technical, and social skills that will enable them to
become productive, contributing members of our community, state,
and nation.

HJH Top Ten

Citizenship Award Winners
Eighth graders who received Citizenship Awards were (from right)

On Tuesday, May 20, the eighth-grade class of 2008
gathered for the last time at HJH to say farewell to their junior
high school experience. Director of Schools George Chapman,
Assistant Director Doris Battle, Principal Dontye Bradford and
Assistant Principle Don Sims, with the help of teachers and
representatives from the school’s Partners In Education presented
awards recognizing the students for academic and other
achievement.
The Top Ten students this year are (in order,
starting with Number 1) Reeves Garrett, Seth Tillman, Taylor
Primrose, Madison Eubanks, Brionna Fields, Alycia Johns, Kaylee
Avant, Jay Clinton, Patrick Sellari, and Karla Cisneros.
Also receiving recognition were the eighth-grade
Citizenship Award winners. Xavier Cole was the winner, and Reeves
Garrett, Chelsey Owens and Seth Tillman received honorable
mention. Mrs. Hope Cannon, representing the Brownsville Exchange
Club, made these presentations.
Among other awards, five students qualified for
state recognition in the Duke University Talent Identification
Program. These students scored at or above 95th percentile on the
national norms of a standardized achievement test. To participate,
a student must take the ACT or SAT test that are designed for
college-bound high school students. A student who participates and
qualifies for state recognition is in the top 25 percent of the
Talent Search pool. The five students honored were Connor Coulston,
Sarah Lewis, Morgan Marlar, Molly McAdams, and Rebecca Pearson.
Haywood Junior High School students who have made
first honor roll all year were:
8th Grade - Kaylee Avant, Reeves Garrett, Taylor Primrose, Seth
Tillman; and 7th Grade - Sarah Lewis, Morgan Marlar, Molly
McAdams, Rebecca Pearson, Hannah Roberts, and Jasmine Taylor.
Receiving the Haywood County Academic Excellence
Awards at HJH were Kaylee Avant, Jay Clinton, Xavier Cole, Houston
Cozart, Madison Eubanks, Brionna Fields, Reeves Garrett, Dwight
Johnson, Rachel Johnson, Kaitlyn Kaiser, Sara Long, Nijaa Murray,
Chelsey Owens, Taylor Primrose, Patrick Sellari, and Seth Tillman.
Recipients of this award must score advanced in all
four areas of the TCAP
Achievement Test (reading/language arts, math, science, and social
studies). They also must have at least a B average with no grades
below a C, and a satisfactory conduct record.
HJH Warrior Awards were also given, as well as
Writing Assessment Awards, Academic Achievement Awards,
Principal’s Awards, President’s Awards for Academic Excellence,
Perfect Attendance Awards and awards for subject areas at the
school.
About 275 eighth graders will advance to the ninth
grade at Haywood High School in the fall of 2008.
HJH receives replica of historical piece

Haywood Junior High recently received a full-size
replica of Rembrandt Peal’s famous “porthole” portrait of George
Washington and a flag that was flown over his home at Mount
Vernon, Virginia. These came as part of an official Celebration
Kit from Mt. Vernon’s school outreach program. The portrait hangs
proudly in the HJH library, in honor of one of our founding
fathers, George Washington. HJH will also be receiving more
projects, lesson plans, and programs to help honor America’s first
president. HJH Principal Dontye Bradford and Assistant Principal
Don Sims are pictures with the framed portrait.
HJH Track team named to All-Tournament
Haywood Junior High School track team members named
to the All-Tournament team were Andre’ Douglas, Khadeja Hodge,
Dakisha Watkins, Tim Moore, Demitri Boyd and DeMarious Douglas.
Four students excel in Guitar Hero contest

The Guitar Hero Competition was an incentive-based
video game competition in which teachers rewarded cadets who did
their best on the TCAP test throughout the week. Teachers
submitted names of students they considered to be outstanding
cadets on a daily basis. At the end of the week of testing, 30
students were selected to participate in the competition.
Participants included Jalen Bond, Brent Crawford,
Maranda Dempsey, Jayme Evans, Rachel Johnson, Reeves Garrett,
Alfredo Aguirre, Josh Avery, Chevia Hughes, Matthew Hooper,
Charles Moody, Ashlyn Young, Andrew Tarkington, Allix Lonon, Blake
Bolden, Sheronica Mercer, Ashley Wellington, Zanebria Henderson,
Raeanne Williams, Jay Clinton, Houston Cozart, Dwight Johnson,
Dalton Jones, Patrick Sellari, Seth Tillman, Jesus Acevedo,
Christian Canada, Alycia Johns, John Person, and Andrew Thomas.
After four rounds, the first-place winner was Seth
Tillman, second place went to Blake Bolden, third to Brent
Crawford, and fourth to Christian Canada.
On Monday, May 19, the top four students had the
opportunity to compete against staff members Mrs. Bradford, Coach
May, and Ms. Coulston.
