HES Afternoon Enrichment – it’s about Tennessee and music

The afternoon enrichment program for first and second grade
students at HES has begun. Mrs. Robin Philpot is teaching about
the state of Tennessee, its history, culture and people. Ms.
Patricia Gaietto is preparing a musical comedy program you’ll
have to hear to believe. Students spend two days each week with
Ms. Gaietto and two days with Mrs. Philpot. In this photo some
of the students were caught “hamming it up” in their “Read Me
Week” finery.
HES celebrates “Read Me Week”

March 1-5 was “Read Me Week” at Haywood Elementary School.
Everyone had a wonderful time celebrating the joy of reading.
Students remembered what would have been “Dr. Seuss’s” 106
birthday on March 2 and that just added to the fun. The kids
“took their hats off to reading,” “wiggled their toes in funny
socks,” read “each other’s shirts” and had special readers. The
students and staff really got into the spirit of the week on
Friday when everyone dressed up as their favorite character from
a book.
Firefighters visit Haywood Elementary

Mrs. Annette Hill’s second-grade class had Mr. Jeff Russell and
Mr. Travis Young from the Brownsville Fire Department to visit
recently. The story for the week was titled “Fire Fighter,” so
it was a real treat to hear what the two firemen had to say
about their jobs. The students learned about the many jobs of a
fireman.

Mr. Ross visits HES students

Students in Mrs. Cheri Velotta’s class had a treat visiting with
Mr. Willie Ross, veteran bus driver for Haywood County Schools.
Mr. Ross was invited by his great-grandson, Kendall Bond, who
was the Student of the Week in Mrs. Velotta’s class. Mr. Ross
shared with the class about his education, his many occupations,
and the changes he has seen over the years. Mr. Ross has been a
Road Commissioner, a store owner and operator, and a bus driver
in our county for 42 years. The students were very interested
when he told them that he had been Mrs. Riddle’s bus driver! Mr.
Ross is a very kind, gentle-hearted, industrious man who knows
the value of education and hard work.
“Energized Guys” educate HES students

Students were both entertained and informed by “The Energized
Guys” about ways to conserve energy and natural resources on
February 25. Two actors from the National Theater for Children
presented the program which was sponsored by TVA and the local
power company. The students learned that it is easy to conserve
energy by turning off computers, televisions, and lights when
you leave your room or house and by parents turning down the
water heater. The children were very attentive and seemed to
really
enjoy the presentation.

Recycled Piggy Banks!

Wow! Did you see those great looking “Piggy
Banks” the kids at HES made
out of recycled materials for Mrs. Bridget Dancy?
Slithery visitor fascinates students

Recently Haywood Elementary students had a very slithery guest
visit our school. Ms. Kim Smythe, who works for the Tennessee
Wildlife Federation, brought her King snake to visit in Ms.
Clark’s classroom. Mrs. Coleman's children joined the group as
everyone learned about the habitats and feeding habits of
snakes. Some of the children were brave and actually touched the
8-year-old, 4-1/2 foot visitor.
Stacie Lefave named Haywood Elementary Teacher of the Year

Miss Stacie Lefave
Stacie Lefave was selected by her peers as the Haywood Elementary
Teacher of the Year. She is currently in her sixth year of
teaching in the Haywood County School System. She taught fourth
grade one year and second grade for five years. Miss Stacie is a
native of Brownsville and a graduate of Haywood High School.
She wanted to become a teacher because of the wonderful role
models that she had growing up in the schools of Haywood County.
Miss Stacie holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Human Learning K-8 from
The University of Tennessee-Martin. She is a member of TEA and
of Alpha Gamma Delta Honorary Teacher Sorority. She was named
Wal-Mart’s Teacher of the Year in 2008. Miss Stacie is the
daughter of Marlen and Mary Lefave.
“It has been a pleasure working with Miss Lefave. Every time I
walk into her classroom, her students are engaged in learning
and enthusiasm fills the air,” Principal Tracy Riddle said. “She
is always positive and ready to do anything I ask of her. We are
very fortunate to have her at Haywood Elementary.”
HES fundraiser a great success

Everyone at Haywood Elementary says, “Thank you to everyone in the
community for your support for our spring fundraiser!” The
students were able to sell more than $6,500 worth of “cookie
dough,” and the proceeds from the fundraiser will be used to
purchase a Marqee sign to be placed in the front of the school
building. This will better enable members of the community to
stay informed of events at the school. Miss Elizabeth Lovell’s
was the first-grade class that sold the most with more that
$2,000 in sales, and Miss Britany Anderson’s class sold the most
in second grade with a total of $1,158.50. Individual winners
were Amanda Watson with $600 in sales, Luc Young with $471,
Perry Woodland with $376 and Benjamin Naylor with $275. These
four students are members of Mrs. Currie’s class, Miss. Lefave’
class, Miss Stanley’s class, and Mrs. Reagan’s class.
Students receive messages from around the world

Students in Miss Elizabeth Lovell’s first-grade eCLASS has been
receiving postcards from around the world. Students asked
friends and family to send postcards from different areas of the
world. On the postcards, senders wrote three facts about their
location. Once the postcard was received, the class discussed
the three facts, located the place on a map, and researched
other information about the destination.
Currently, the class has received postcards from 18 states and 15
countries. Some of the U.S. favorites include The Alamo (San
Antonio, Texas), The Golden Gate Bridge (San Francisco,
California), and Mount Rushmore (Keystone, South Dakota). One
student even heard from her father who is stationed in Iraq!
“The kids have loved getting mail. This project has stirred up an
excitement in learning about different places. We cannot wait to
add to our list,” Miss Elizabeth said.
HE students begin100 Days projects

One of the most anticipated projects at HES is the yearly
home/school project that students complete about the 100th day
of School. Each child, with assistance from their family, makes
a poster with 100 items to represent each day they have been in
school. It was touching to see what one first grader choose as
the subject for the “100 Days of School” project.
Winter Book Jam features Super Bowl … and super books

Everyone has the fever as the Super Bowl was fast approaching and
that fact
was evident at Haywood Elementary on Wednesday, January 27.
Students and staff members wore a sports jersey in support of
the school’s winter Book Jam sponsored by the UT Extension
office in Brownsville. The theme for this jam was “Super Book
Jam” and you can tell from the smiling faces that the students
had a
“super time!”
Haywood Elementary honors School Board members

Everyone at Haywood Elementary was so excited to have Haywood
County School Board Chairman Mr. Harold Garrett and
Vice-Chairman Mrs. Robbie Jarrett-King join them at morning
meeting on January 27. January 25-29 was School Board
Appreciation Week, and each child in each class signed a puzzle
piece that was assembled on stage to create a banner that
expressed the appreciation of Haywood Elementary students and
staff for the Haywood County School Board. Mr. Garrett took the
banner to the central office to be displayed so everyone will
know how much Haywood Elementary appreciate each and every
member of the school board. After morning meeting a light
breakfast of fruit and pastries was served to the special
guests.
Red, White and Blue … Snowmen!

Haywood Elementary School has a very patriotic group of snowmen
that have come to visit. Don’t they look happy!
HE students receive Reading Wall of Fame recognition

Mrs. Bridgit Dancy presented certificates to students in
recognition of those whose names were added to the “Reading Wall
of Fame” at the Haywood Elementary Awards Program on January 22.
Mrs. Hester’s class received a trophy for best class
participation in utilizing the center.
HES students earn awards at ceremony

Haywood Elementary School held it’s third six weeks awards program
on Friday, January 22. It was “come back home day” for our
presenters. Mrs. Denise Pearson, who is currently serving as
Special Services Diagnostician for Haywood County, was the guest
presenter at the second-grade program in the morning. Mr. Jerry
Smith, Executive Director of Federal Programs and Exceptional
Children, was the guest presenter for the first-grade program in
the afternoon. Mrs. Pearson taught at HES for 15 years before
moving to her present position, and Mr. Smith was principal at
HES for 20 years.

Mr. Stephen Mays, HES assistant principal, presented the Character
Awards at the program. The trait for the six weeks had been
“Citizenship” and everyone was very proud of our winners!

Mr. Michael Banks was the Rotary Club representative who awarded a
bicycle
to a very lucky first grader who had achieved perfect
attendance. Thank you, Rotary Club, for your continued support
of our students and school.
