Board approves new director’s contract
When the Haywood County School Board met in regular session on November 11,
members approved a contract for the new director of schools, money for school
building repairs, transfer requests for four students, mini-grants for 10
teachers, several policy changes and budget amendments.
Chairman Harold Garrett announced that he had met with Marlon King, the board’s
pick for the new director of schools position, and they had agreed on a
contract, contingent on approval of the board. Mr. Garrett proposed a 4-year
contract to run from January 1, 2009, to December 31, 2012, with a salary of
$90,000. Board member Daniel Thornton suggested that they shorten the term of
the contract to the school’s fiscal year-end to avoid dealing with the issue in
the middle of a school year. Board members agreed, and passed the contract that
will be in effect until June 30, 2012, instead of December 31.
Mr. Garrett also reported that the budget committee had met, and that Interim
Director of Schools Doris Battle made a request for funds for needed repairs on
several school properties. She said the central office building needs a roof and
that the high school needs repairs on the wall panels and on the canopies
outside the school. The total amount she is requesting for these repairs is
$272,170, based on the lowest bids submitted on the projects. She reported that
the schools had a portion of the money in their budget, but that they would have
to take $173,170 out of the schools fund balance to complete the projects. The
board approved the measure. Mrs. Battle added that the fund balance is currently
about $2,142,000.
In other business, board members agreed to allow four students, one from one
family and three from another, to attend Haywood County Schools as out-of-county
students. The families had made the requests. Chairman Garrett asked about the
conduct records of the students, and Interim Director Doris Battle said she had
not received those records yet, and that when she did, it would be up to the
schools to decide whether to allow them to attend, if the board approved the
measures, contingent on good behavior reports. Board members voted to allow the
students to attend local schools.
Ten Haywood County teachers received $200 mini-grants for projects in their
classrooms. Three Anderson teachers were recipients of the grants. Jerra Leek
will purchase “Listen and Learn Letter Sounds” with her grant. Krista Brown will
use the grant money to purchase “Fun with Phonics” for her students, and Kelly
Key will buy “Dynamic Dictionaries” with her funds.
At Haywood Elementary, Valerie Sceals will purchase a “Listening Center” for her
students, and at East Side, Abby Hooper will purchase “How the Holocaust
Affected My Hometown” that will teach her students the importance of respecting
different cultures as well as understanding the effects of intolerance.
Three Haywood Junior High teachers received mini-grants. Bernice Thompson will
purchase “Take It to Your Seat Geography Tubs,” and Thomas Young will buy “Study
of Invertebrates with the Aide of Dichotomous Keys.” HJH teacher Fannie Beasley
will purchase “Recommending Reading for Incoming Freshmen” for her students.
At Haywood High, Kenneth Emerson and Gay Thomas will buy “Bridging the Gap,” so
students can use computer software and geometric principles to build a bridge
within prescribed parameters. Julie Taylor will teach her nursing students about
different “constructed” injuries with “Moulage for EMS Disaster.”
The next regularly scheduled school board meeting will be held on Tuesday,
December 9, at 6 p.m.
