It’s time to celebrate!

It was time to celebrate on Friday, April 28, the
last day of Terra Nova Week. East Side Principal Tammie Canada
told students that there would be a surprise after the testing,
and they were thrilled with the Rock Wall Obstacle Course that
transformed the school’s gymnasium into “Funland.” And they were
having fun!

Planting trees for Arbor Day

On April 28, East Side students celebrated Arbor
Day and the end of TCAP testing by planting trees. Mrs. Rita
Matheny and Ms. Maria Hart had their classes plant several
varieties of trees in different areas on the campus. Mr. and Mrs.
Bob Ford (pictured) donated the trees and provided information on the
characteristics of the different trees and their ecological value.
Before and After School Programs a success
East Side Elementary Principal Tammie Canada said the Before and
After School programs this year were a success. The Before School
program was directed by teacher Thomas Young using the
SuccessMaker program to further develop participating students’
reading and math skills. Students were assigned to five different
teachers in the After School Program that met Monday through
Thursday. In these classes, students were engaged in various
activities to help them master grade-level reading and math
skills.
Both programs began on October 11 and ended on April 20.
Local weather brought to you by East Side
Elementary

East Side teacher Thomas Young, pictured with
several students, was instrumental in securing a weather station
at the school six years ago.
If you tune in to Channel 3 in Memphis for the weather, your local
forecast is coming from the East Side Elementary weather station.
According to teacher Thomas Young, the school used grant money
about six years ago to buy the equipment to become an Automated
Weather Source, and Channel 3 WREG uses this information in making
the community’s forecast.
Administrators, faculty, staff members and students all enjoy the
“accurate” readings they can see on the monitor in the front hall
as they walk through every day. |
