Welcome to a new year
It is my pleasure to welcome all Haywood County students to
the 2008-2009 school year. As interim director, I realize the
great responsibility our school system has in shaping the
lives of the children. We hope all students have settled into
their classrooms and are looking forward to a great school
year.
As you may have heard, our system made AYP during the last
school year, and we are proud of the administrators, teachers
and students for their hard work. This is an ongoing challenge
for us all, and you should know that our administrators are
ever vigilant in doing what needs to be done to continue this
trend in our schools. I have visited all the schools this
year and always enjoy seeing all the children at work and at
play. It’s part of our job to provide not only academic
training in our schools but also lessons in good behavior,
social interaction, the arts, music, and athletics. Each
school is providing healthy food choices and exercise
opportunities for the students to promote a healthier
lifestyle and opportunities to learn through hands-on
experiences in many different areas. We want our schools to be
a well-rounded learning experience for all children.
So, to all the students and their families, let’s join
together for another year to give our children an exceptional
educational experience. It’s the most important thing we can
do for them and for our community.

School board reelects Mrs. Gruenewald as chairman

The September 12 Haywood County School Board meeting was the first for new board
members Robbie Jarrett King (left) and Pearlie Hess (second from right), who
took office September 1. Chairman Patricia Gruenewald (third from left) was also
re-elected chairman of the board, and Harold Garrett (third from left), who is
beginning his 19th year on the board, was elected to serve as vice-chairman.
When the Haywood County School Board met in regular session on Tuesday,
September 12, among other business, Patricia Gruenewald was re-elected by her
fellow board members to serve as chairman. She has held this position for 18
years. Board member Harold Garret was given the nod of confidence to serve as
the vice-chairman.
In other business, board members heard a report from Director George Chapman
about the construction work at the high school, agreed to renew their business
trip insurance and renew the contract with Kenneth Cozart and Associates to
perform audits of the school activity accounts and cafeteria funds. They opened
and awarded bids for surplus vehicles and equipment and reviewed a list of
teacher waivers and permits.
They also discussed the ACT test scores and again the excellent results of the
AYP tests. The Haywood County School System, as well as each individual school,
was deemed in Good Standing by the state. ACT composite test scores were up
overall last school year, from 18.6 in 2004/2005 to 19.2.
Director Chapman reported to board members that AYP Day on September 1, a day
set aside in all the schools for celebration of the AYP scores, was indeed
successful.
All members of the Haywood County Board of Education will be attending the
Tennessee School Board Association convention in Nashville November 12-14.
The next monthly board meeting will be held October 10 at 6 p.m.
