Flowers or vegetables, anyone?
HHS Ag Department highlights “fruits of their labor”

The Haywood High School Agriculture Department is
teaching life lessons. Whether students want to go into an
agri-business or simply know how to manage a home flower or
vegetable and fruit garden, they now have the skills that they
have learned in Greenhouse Management classes. And, they are
selling the “fruits of their labor.”
The class’s greenhouse on the South side of the school is
brimming with a variety of flowers, fruits and vegetable, ripe
for the taking – at a reasonable price – to benefit the school’s
ag program.
For sale are Impatiens, wave petunias, marigolds, five varieties
of tomato plants, and an assortment of pepper plants. Among the
tomato varieties are cherry, Jet Star, Parks Whopper, Big Boy
and Roma. Pepper offerings include green bell peppers, cayenne,
banana, jalapeño and Habanero. The class also offers hanging
flower baskets for sale.
The students mix the soil, start with seeds in January, then
transfer the plants into flats and are responsible for all of
their care until they are ready for sale. Students are in the
greenhouse at HHS from 12:30 to 1:30 each day.
Instructors for the HHS Ag Department are John Joyner and Garry
Butler. Between the two teachers, they offer 11 different
classes in the agriculture program that is part of the school’s
Career and Technical Division.
