“Mock Crash” at HHS sends strong message

The 2010 Mock Crash at Haywood High School, enacted each year to
help teens understand the consequences of drinking and driving,
was truly a drama this year with the stage set in the school’s
north parking lot on April 28. The simulated drama begins after
a drunk teen driver crashes into another car of teens, causing
injury and death. The Brownsville Police Department, along with
all other local emergency management representatives, including
the “Hospital Wing,” participated with drama students, parents
and others to make this “mock crash” come alive.
After the mock crash production in front of the Class of 2010,
Memphis meteorologist Dave Brown spoke to the students about his
family experience of losing his daughter, a grandchild and an
unborn grandchild in an accident with drunk driver.

Tiffany King makes history for HHS volleyball
By Xavier Cole

Everyone was excited about the historic signing of Tiffany King
as Haywood High’s first volleyball player to receive a
scholarship. Pictured are (seated, from left) Martha Watkins,
Tiffany King, Martha King, and Coach Fabiana Lima; and
(standing, from left) HHS Principal Robert Mitchell, Athletic
Director Jim Frazier, HHS Coach Danniel Springfield, Vice
Principal Yvette Blue, and Assistant Principal Dr. Jerry Pyron.
Another outstanding moment took place in the history of
Haywood High Athletics on Monday, April 12. Haywood High had its
first ever athletic scholarship signing for volleyball. Senior
Tiffany King, the daughter of Martha and Joe King, signed with
Martin Methodist College in Pulaski, Tennessee. This was a
special moment for several reasons. It was the first signing of
a HHS student to play collegiate volleyball. It was HHS
Volleyball Coach Danniel Springfield’s first season, and
volleyball was the fall sport team with the highest winning
percentage this year.
The Haywood High administrative staff was on hand for the
signing along with Athletic Director Jim Frazier, HHS Coach
Danniel Springfield, Margaret Watkins (King’s aunt), Martha King
(mother), and Martin Methodist coach Fabiana Lima.
Coach Lima said, “We look for the talented athletes often
overlooked by other institutions.” King is receiving one of six
scholarships set aside for the volleyball program and will major
in pediatric nursing. Congratulations to King, her family, and
the Haywood Volleyball program on this historic event.
HHS students explore being “On Their Own”

Mrs. Denita Jarratt and Mrs.
Nekieta Johnson’s Family and Consumer Science classes in the
Haywood High School Career and Technical division recently
participated in an activity that gave their students a look at
what it will be like when they are “On Their Own.” The three-day
program was presented and facilitated by UT Extension Service
Agents Tiffany Thomas, Chad Dirl and Travis Wade.
The first day the students
completed a career interest profile and were then assigned a
career with salary information. They were also given a family
for which they had to provide. The third day of the program,
there was a simulation in which they had to use their monthly
income to purchase a car, a house, insurance, daycare, food, and
clothing. They had to write checks for the payment of each item.
According to Mrs. Jarratt and Mrs. Johnson, it was a really
eye-opener for the students and a great opportunity for them to
experience what it will be like in the real world.
