WNWS students travel to
Memphis
Telecommunications Center

Members of the Haywood High School Broadcast
Journalism and Media Concepts classes recently visited the Memphis
Telecommunications Center, home of the Memphis City Schools radio
and TV stations. While HHS has its own radio station, WNWS 1520
AM, Memphis students must travel to the telecommunications center
to have hands-on experience. Local students enjoyed touring the
state-of-the-art center and were invited to return to the center
for an upcoming competition and to use the center’s TV station.
HHS Drama Department to present
"How to Succeed in Business Without Trying."
Members of the Haywood High School drama classes
will be performing in the play, "How to Succeed in Business
Without Trying," the first weekend in March. Drama teacher Allison
Byrum started practices when the semester started and the actors
will continue preparing for the comical musical until curtain
time. The story is about a man who works hard to get to the top in
business.
HHS Tomcats and Lady Tomcats on
a roll

Haywood High School basketball is again exciting
this year with both the men and women holding good records. The
Tomcats are 17-2 with seven games left. Last year they ended the
season 31-4. This is Coach Winston Varnado’s first year with
former Tomcat Jason Winfrey as his assistant. The team only has
two seniors and some strong juniors and sophomores coming up.
Three sophomores are already getting a great deal of playing time
this year. Last year the team won the district and regional
competitions, as well as sub-state, before losing in the state
tournament.
The Lady Tomcats are 11 and 4 for the year, 4-2 in district play.
Long-time coach Zandra Jones, with Chrystel Roach as her
assistant, have five seniors, three of whom are starters. “We have
good potential for future teams,” Jones said.
The Haywood High teams have in their district University School of
Jackson, Ripley, Covington and Fayette Ware in Somerville. The
regular season ends February 11, then the district tournament runs
from February 14-21. The regional competition is Feb. 23 through
March 3, and if all goes well, we’ll play in the sub-state
competition beginning March 6. The state contest is March 15-18.

On the HHS freshman front, the men and women each have 5 wins and
3 losses.
There are two games left in regular season play. Pete Norville is coach for both teams.
