Biology Club spruces up HHS campus

Some of the 50 members of the HHS Biology Club spent several hours
last Saturday cleaning up litter from the campus of Haywood High
School. Teachers Kavin Carr and Brian Ivey supervised the group.
Clinton Neal, director of the Haywood County Solid Waste
Department, partnered with the club for the first time this
year. Neal said he would be conducting a study to determine the
amount of recyclable material gathered. “While the material
gathered this year is too contaminated for recycle, the data
gathered would be very helpful in the future regarding
recycling,” Neal said.
Participating students acquire community service hours for the
Tennessee Scholars program and also gather points to participate
in a field trip to the Memphis Zoo sponsored by the Biology
Club.
This was the fourth annual campus cleanup sponsored by the HHS
Biology Club.
Haywood team Special Olympics Basketball

On Saturday, March 14, the HHS Special Olympics Team traveled to
Nashville to compete in the state tournament. The Haywood

a final score of 37-30 to become the state champions. Members of
the team are Cordarious Baltimore, Julius Hughes, Jamarious
Chapman, Xavier Robertson, Floyd Boyd, Shaquille Cater, Quenta
Reed and Kevin Jones. Coaches for the team were HHS teachers
Chrystel Roach and Jason Winfrey. “We appreciate Ms. Laulla
Pruiett, Justin Thompson and Mrs. Peggy Reed for their support
throughout the tournament,” Coach Roach said.

Pictured with the coaches was Tennessee Titan Cornerback Courtland
Finnegan (#31).

The Haywood High School Special Olympics basketball team also
competed in February in a tournament at Munford High School.
Those competing were Seth Glidewell, Shaquille Carter, Tyamier
Murphy, Tyler Howard, and Michel Reid. Coach for the team is
Chrystel Roach.
Chris Rich serves as SkillsUSA West Tennessee
Vice-President

Haywood High made its mark on the West Tennessee
SkillsUSA Regional Competition held March 5 in Memphis. Chris
Rich, a junior at HHS, was the presiding officer at the
competition. Chris was commended by Ms. Lana Pierce, Director of
the Tennessee Technology Center at Memphis, for the professional
manner in which he officiated the awards ceremony.
“Chris, who is never shy, is also competing in the
Extemporaneous Speaking competition at the state level this
year,” SkillsUSA sponsor at HHS Kenneth Emerson said. “We are
proud Chris is representing HHS on the state level in the
SkillsUSA organization.”
SkillsUSA is a student-run organization that
strives for higher skills and development of the leadership
qualities of its members. Chris and the other state officers are
in the process of preparing for the state competition and
conference, being held in Chattanooga, April 20-22. Chris will
be one of the presiding officers at this year’s conference. As
busy as he will be, Chris will also be campaigning to retain his
position as a Tennessee SkillsUSA state officer.
Jamie Ferguson serves as HHS SkillsUSA
Vice-President

According to HHS teacher and SkillsUSA Sponsor
Kenneth Emerson, Jamie Ferguson is on the road to another
impressive year in the SkillsUSA organization. Jamie
participated in the West Tennessee SkillsUSA Regional
competition in Architectural Drafting and earned the points
needed to advance to the state level competition. Jamie, a
senior, placed third in the state competition last year and we
are expecting great things of him this year. Jamie will also
serve as a voting delegate for Haywood at the State Conference,
and campaign manager for Dan McCool is his bid for a Tennessee
SkillsUSA officer.
Larry Kinney, Haywood High SkillsUSA Secretary

HHS SkillsUSA Sponsor Kenneth Emerson said, “Larry
has been a tremendous asset to the local organization over the
last two years. As a senior at HHS, he sets an excellent example
for the younger students.” Larry has met the qualifications and
will be competing at the state level in the Job Interview
contest. Larry’s cool and calm manner should serve him well in
this competition. Larry will also represent Haywood as a voting
delegate at the State SkillsUSA Conference.
Dan McCool, HHS SkillsUSA Reporter competes in
contest
Dan entered the West Tennessee SkillsUSA skills
Residential Wiring competition and earned enough points to
advance to the state level competition. Dan was selected to
participate based on his strong work ethic and interest in the
electrical field. Dan, a junior, is in his first year of the
electrical program at HHS and did well against a more seasoned
group of competitors. Dan’s interest in SkillsUSA and the
training the organization offers has inspired him to run for a
SkillsUSA state office. “Under the guidance of Chris Rich,
current West Tennessee Vice-President, and Jamie Ferguson, a
seasoned campaign manager, we expect Dan to be successful in his
bid for an State Officer position,” said HHS teacher and
SkillsUSA sponsor Kenneth Emerson.
David Dobbs serves as HHS SkillsUSA
Parliamentarian

David attended the SkillsUSA Regional Competition
as a contestant coordinator for the Haywood High team. He was
instrumental in the success of this year’s contestants. David
has been an active SkillsUSA member for three years and the
“go-to guy” for local projects.
Students helping students

Students at Haywood High School from Mrs. Denita
Jarrett’s Child Development class come to Anderson every
Wednesday morning and spend time in the Kindergarten classrooms
with a program called Students as Teachers. They work with the
students in small groups and perform one-on-one tutoring.
Anderson Assistant Principal Tracy Riddle is especially proud
that one of her past kindergarten students, Quinterrio Jarmon,
is now a HHS senior and is one of the student volunteers in Mrs.
Nicole Henderson’s kindergarten class. |
