Brief Notes
Doris Battle, Editor

Welcome to a new year

It is my pleasure to welcome all Haywood County students to the 2008-2009 school year. As interim director, I realize the great responsibility our school system has in shaping the lives of the children. We hope all students have settled into their classrooms and are looking forward to a great school year.

As you may have heard, our system made AYP during the last school year, and we are proud of the administrators, teachers and students for their hard work. This is an ongoing challenge for us all, and you should know that our administrators are ever vigilant in doing what needs to be done to continue this trend in our schools.

I have visited all the schools this year and always enjoy seeing all the children at work and at play. It’s part of our job to provide not only academic training in our schools but also lessons in good behavior, social interaction, the arts, music, and athletics. Each school is providing healthy food choices and exercise opportunities for the students to promote a healthier lifestyle and opportunities to learn through hands-on experiences in many different areas. We want our schools to be a well-rounded learning experience for all children.

So, to all the students and their families, let’s join together for another year to give our children an exceptional educational experience. It’s the most important thing we can do for them and for our community.

Celebrating another outstanding year at Haywood High School!

At the Haywood High School Academic Banquet this spring, 144 students qualified for academic honors.

The Spanish Club collected school supplies and hygiene items for the El Ayudante mission in Leon, Nicaragua in January. This semester, Spanish Club members are collecting items that the Chamber of Commerce is requesting for the Iraq-bound 1175th National Guard unit from Brownsville.

Members of Mu Alpha Theta helped HHS to host the fourth annual MathMeet in November. Approximately 200 students from 10 schools participated. Several Mu Alpha Theta members also helped with the Tennessee Mathematics Teachers Association state conference in Martin and were acknowledged at the TMTA banquet for a job well done.

At the MathMeet, team members Audrey Pattat, Hunter Burroughs, Isaac Olmedo, and Shanel Crawford-Harris placed first in the team event. Logan Pyron, Shanel Crawford-Harris, and Isaac Olmedo won TI-84 Silver Edition graphing calculators for their scores in the competition.

The Water Education Team (WET) began its ninth year of operation in December. The team collects water quality data on the Hatchie River each month.

Nineteen HHS science students went on a week-long Dauphin Island Sea Lab field trip in October. They studied marine biology, oceanography, and ecology.

The Lady Cats Softball Team advanced to the State Tournament in May for the first time in school history. Team members who were named All-West Tennessee players were Maggie Gardner (first team), Whitlee Sullivan (second team), and Leah Taylor (honorable mention). All-District players (2006) were Leah Taylor, Whitlee Sullivan, Jessica Hendrix, Megan Perry, and Maggie Gardner.

The choral music program began the year with performances by the Show Choir and Beginner Choir for HHS Open House. The Show Choir has performed at various events throughout the year, including the Hatchie Fall Festival, the Ben Rich Center Thanksgiving Feast, INSOUTH Bank’s “Taste of the Season,” Christmas at College Hill, and the Regional Academic Decathlon Banquet.

In August and November, the Beta Club sponsored student helpers at the voting precincts. Haywood County is possibly the only county in the state to have students available to assist poll workers.

The Interact Club received its charter this year. After raising funds, the club was able to sponsor a family at Christmas, donate supplies to a mission trip to Nicaragua, and donate supplies to the 1175th National Guard unit.

HHS Juniors in Youth Leadership met Governor Phil Bredesen and conferred with Senator John Wilder and other state dignitaries when they were
guests at the Tennessee Senate sessions in Nashville.

Five HHS math students placed in the top three in their divisions at the TMTA Math Contest at the Dyersburg State Community College testing center. Nine HHS students placed in the top 10!

Drum Major Portia Reed received a superb rating from judges at the Vanderbilt Invitational, and the band placed third in the Lane College Homecoming parade this year.

One hundred four French Club members traveled to Memphis this spring to experience French cuisine. They lunched at ENCORE Restaurant, and Chef José Gutierrez, named as one of the “Best 100 Chefs of the Millennium” in the U. S., cooked and conversed with the students. The croque monsieur sandwiches and the crème brulée dessert were special treats.

Tiffany Hicks qualified for State Cross Country Competition in November. Tiffani had run only two meets prior to qualifying for State. She finished in the top half of the runners.

Amy Olmedo and Shanel Crawford-Harris have been selected to represent Haywood High School at Volunteer Girls’ State, a program for Tennessee junior girls aimed at promoting education and awareness of American history, Tennessee history, and citizenship. Girls will be able to attend lectures and informational sessions on current events, politics, and history. The students will be assigned to one of twelve cities and will participate in the political process of a city, county, and state.

Members of the Girls’ Ensemble, Concert Choir, and Show Choir performed during the holidays for students and for the public. They sang for residents of Sugar Creek Retirement Center and shoppers at Old Hickory Mall in Jackson. In February, these groups hosted an Evening of Sweets and Treats, and in April they sang at Sugar Creek again as well as for students at Anderson and Haywood Elementary schools.

Ladrecus Shepard was elected state president of Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA). Ladrecus is the first male president of this organization. He will attend training in Washington, DC, in October, and will be traveling to Anaheim, California, this summer for the national FCCLA meeting.

HHS Drama students, Health Occupations students, and Youth Coalition members presented a mock crash for seniors at HHS and at Trenton Peabody High School. Both mock crashes were very successful and reminded seniors of the dangers of drunk driving.

April 27, the HHS Band will be competing in the World’s Biggest Fish Fry parade in Paris, Tennessee, where they have placed first for the past two years.

The Haywood High School student bank, Stockholderz Bank, opened and is staffed by students during the lunch shifts.

Members of the first-place team were Laura Zamaguey, Grecia Hurtado, and Shana Turner. Members of the third-place team were Chelsea Funderburk, Matthew Summerlin, and Joanna Freeman.

Haywood High School has an outstanding faculty, staff, and administration who work diligently each day to provide the best possible education for Haywood County’s high school students. Evidence of this standard of excellence is reflected in the various awards that have gone to members of the faculty throughout the year.

For instance, Michelle Tillman, choral director, was named Haywood County Teacher of the Year for grades 9-12.

Science department chairman Kavin Carr was inducted into the National Honor Society for teachers (2006-2007) and was also included for the second year in Who’s Who Among American High School Teachers. Also nominated for Who’s Who Among American High School Teachers were Tracy Mitchell, math teacher, and English teacher George Norvell.

Softball coach Chanda Franks was named 2006 All-West Tennessee Coach of the Year.

Peggy Haynes, teacher of family and consumer sciences, was the recipient of the Rose Award for her dedicated service to FCCLA. There is only one Rose Award given in the state each year.

Pam Diebold received her Master Adviser award from FCCLA for outstanding implementation of a co-curricular chapter and adviser mentorship.

SAFE!…The play at the plate is pitcher Maggie Gardner tossing to catcher Trista

The HHS Lady Cats played 48 softball games and won 30 of them for a winning percentage of 62.5 percent. In the first one-third of the season, the Lady Cats won 14 and lost two, including the games they played at the Disney World tournament where they were undefeated.

In the last two-thirds of the season, including district and regional tournaments, the Lady Cats slipped to 16 wins and 16 losses for a 50 percent winning record.

Their season and their hopes for a return trip to the state playoffs ended when the Lady Chargers of Martin Westview defeated the Lady Tomcats 11-2 to end the 2007 HHS softball season. Maggie Gardner had the loss and Megan Perry hit a home run.

The good news is that the same team will be back next year.

Local FCCLA chapter receives state honors

At the recent Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) State Meeting, two teachers and one student received honors. Peggy Haynes (left) received the Rose Award that is given to one teacher in the state each year. This award honors an adviser that has exhibited the extra that it takes to be an effective adviser.

Also at the meeting, HHS student Ladrecus Shepard was elected president of the FCCLA for the State of Tennessee. He holds the distinction of being the first male president of the state organization and the only student who has served as an officer of FCCLA for two consecutive years.

HHS teacher and sponsor for FCCLA Pam Diebold (right) received the Master Adviser Award. This award is a national award that is given to teachers who have proven they can do what it takes to promote and encourage their students and the FCCLA organization. She will be attending the National FCCLA Meeting in Anaheim, California, in July to accept her National Award and to accompany Shepard as he serves in his officer capacity.
