Local JROTC unit best in state

Haywood High School Principal Robert Mitchell announced recently that the AFJROTC Unit at Haywood High was named the “2009 TN-944 AFJROTC Unit of the Year” for the state of Tennessee. Local instructors, Lt. Col. Mark Avery, Major Delois Dailey, and MSgt. Mark Parker, attended the 2009 Tennessee Air Force Association State Convention in May in Knoxville and received the award.

This recognition is in addition to the TN-944 Unit receiving the Excellent rating on its inspection this year and the three instructors receiving Outstanding Instructor awards.

This is Major Daley’s 14th year with the program. MSgt. Parker has been with the program for five years, and Lt. Col. Avery, three years. The HHS AFJROTC program, which has been at HHS since 1994, includes classes in leadership, aerospace science, wellness and drill and ceremony. In the 2008-2009 school year, 179 students completed the course of study.

Mock Crash … a collision of drinking and driving

Haywood High School seniors saw first-hand on Wednesday, April 29, a simulation of the results of drinking and driving when the Brownsville Police Department coordinated the annual “Mock Crash” on the high school parking lot. Two wrecked vehicles, injuries, death – all the results of a drunk driver behind the wheel of a car – sending the message to the teen-agers that drinking and driving don’t mix.

In addition to police officers, representatives from the Brownsville Fire Department, the Haywood County Ambulance Authority and the Hospital Wing (helicopter), HHS nursing students and drama students, local wrecker services, the city, the Parks and Recreation Department and the city joined in to make this annual production possible.

After the mock crash production in front of the Class of 2009, Memphis meteorologist Dave Brown spoke to the students about his family experience of losing his daughter, a grandchild and an unborn grandchild in an accident with drunk driver.

FFA members earn awards

At the recent HHS Career and Technical Awards banquet, members of the Future Farmers of America organization received awards from their teachers John Joyner and Garry Butler.

Among the awards, some received Greenhand Degrees and Chapter Degrees. The teachers also gave recognition to all members who competed in contests and to officers of both chapter and Greenhand sets.

Earning the award for Star Greenhand were Hailey Bendal and Tyler Glover. Kaleb Neal and Leslie Smith won the Star Chapter awards, and A. J. Powell was recognized as the Outstanding Junior. A. J. and Dana Hendrix also earned State Degrees.

HHS Band completes another successful year

The Haywood High School Marching Band participated in the Annual World’s Biggest Fish Fry Parade in Paris, Tennessee, on Friday, April 24. As in year’s past the band did very well and received second place in its class.

The band has participated in several events this year, including the Lane College Homecoming Parade. The band has been a loyal participant in this event for the past 6 years and always faces the task of defending its first-place title while competing against bands from Memphis and Nashville.

The band was asked to be the host band for the Lane College Parade and perform at halftime during the game. The students were extremely excited when they were told they would be performing in the stands with Clark Atlanta’s marching band, as you may know from the Drumline movie. In years past, band members had the opportunity to meet actor Denzel Washington while performing in the stands at the Lane College Homecoming game.

The band is also featured on www.marchingnetwork.com where you will find performance videos from college and high school bands all around the United States featured on the site.

Director Dumanic Wade arranges nearly all of the music the Haywood High School Marching Band plays. She has a music arranging company where she writes and arranges music for high school bands all over the United States.
