Local student gains leadership skills at FCCLA
training

Ladrecus Shepard
Ladrecus Shepard, a student at Haywood High Career and Technical
Center, recently returned from the Family, Career and Community
Leaders of America’s (FCCLA) Ultimate State Leadership Academy
(USA) Training held October 1-4, in Virginia.
As the Tennessee State Parliamentarian, Ladrecus had the
opportunity to participate in and complete Phase II, Capital
Leadership, of the FCCLA USA Leadership Training. This powerful
four-part leadership development and certification program focuses
on team building, service, professionalism, planning,
communication, networking, and ethics.
During this leadership training, Ladrecus was able to design goals
and action plans in order to achieve success in meeting
Tennessee’s FCCLA program goals. In addition, all participants of
the USA Leadership Training received advocacy training to prepare
them for visits to their congressional representatives. Ladrecus
went to Capital Hill and met with staff members from Congress and
the House of Representatives and spoke with them about issues that
are important to the FCCLA organization and to the state of
Tennessee. Afterwards, Ladrecus enjoyed a tour of the capital and
a twilight tour of Washington, D.C.
Family, Career and Community Leaders of America is unique among
youth organizations because its programs and planned and run by
members. It is the only career and technical in-school student
organization with the family as its central focus. Participation
in national programs and chapter activities helps members become
strong leaders in their families, careers, and communities.
HHS sponsor for the organization traveling with Ladrecus was Pam
Diebold.
HHS students earn “Dual Credits”

Classes are in progress at the new Technology Center at
Whiteville, Brownsville campus. Haywood High School machinist
students are now attending classes under the direction of
instructor Jared Arnold.
Six Haywood High School students are earning dual credits this
year with the opening of the new Tennessee Technology Center at
Whiteville, Brownsville campus in the Brownsville-Haywood County
Industrial Park this fall.
These HHS juniors and seniors, after being selected through an
application process, were able to enroll in the Machine Tool
Technology class at the center. Students will receive high school
credits as well as credits that will apply at the center if they
continue taking classes there. Career and Technical Director
Rhonda Thompson coordinates the program at HHS.
And the program is free to the students. Their expenses are
covered by the Naifeh-Wilder Scholarships, lottery funds set aside
to be used by students who attend technical centers across the
state.
In addition, Haywood County Schools Director George Chapman
approved the use of school transportation for the students.
“We are very excited our students have the opportunity to take
advantage of these classes,” Thompson said. “Students who earn
certification in this program will be trained to hold high wage,
highly skilled jobs in this field. People with these skills are in
high demand in the job market,” she added.
The center will hold an open house Tuesday, October 10, at 2 p.m.,
and the public is invited to attend.
