Brief Notes
Doris Battle, Editor

Welcome to a new year

It is my pleasure to welcome all Haywood County students to the 2008-2009 school year. As interim director, I realize the great responsibility our school system has in shaping the lives of the children. We hope all students have settled into their classrooms and are looking forward to a great school year.

As you may have heard, our system made AYP during the last school year, and we are proud of the administrators, teachers and students for their hard work. This is an ongoing challenge for us all, and you should know that our administrators are ever vigilant in doing what needs to be done to continue this trend in our schools.

I have visited all the schools this year and always enjoy seeing all the children at work and at play. It’s part of our job to provide not only academic training in our schools but also lessons in good behavior, social interaction, the arts, music, and athletics. Each school is providing healthy food choices and exercise opportunities for the students to promote a healthier lifestyle and opportunities to learn through hands-on experiences in many different areas. We want our schools to be a well-rounded learning experience for all children.

So, to all the students and their families, let’s join together for another year to give our children an exceptional educational experience. It’s the most important thing we can do for them and for our community.

Haywood High School Homecoming 2006

Freshman Float

Sophomore Float

Junior Float

Senior Float

Haywood High School students and community members came out in full force Friday, October 20, to support the hometown team when they celebrated Homecoming 2006 in ‘80s style. The juniors were victorious in the week’s competitions, including winning first place in the float division with their “Love Train.” The sophomore float won second place, the senior float third place, and the freshman float, fourth place. Crowned Homecoming Queen was Ciara Murphy. First runner-up was Kerri Burgar, and second runner-up was Megan Perry. And making the night perfect was the Tomcat’s win over the Ripley Tigers.

Haywood High School Show Choir members raised their voices to entertain residents and visitors at the Hatchie Fall Fest 2006 in downtown Brownsville on October 21. The award-winning choir will be traveling in November to Hawaii where they will represent Tennessee in a Veteran’s program there.

Local student gains leadership skills at FCCLA training

Ladrecus Shepard

Ladrecus Shepard, a student at Haywood High Career and Technical Center, recently returned from the Family, Career and Community Leaders of America’s (FCCLA) Ultimate State Leadership Academy (USA) Training held October 1-4, in Virginia.

As the Tennessee State Parliamentarian, Ladrecus had the opportunity to participate in and complete Phase II, Capital Leadership, of the FCCLA USA Leadership Training. This powerful four-part leadership development and certification program focuses on team building, service, professionalism, planning, communication, networking, and ethics.

During this leadership training, Ladrecus was able to design goals and action plans in order to achieve success in meeting Tennessee’s FCCLA program goals. In addition, all participants of the USA Leadership Training received advocacy training to prepare them for visits to their congressional representatives. Ladrecus went to Capital Hill and met with staff members from Congress and the House of Representatives and spoke with them about issues that are important to the FCCLA organization and to the state of Tennessee. Afterwards, Ladrecus enjoyed a tour of the capital and a twilight tour of Washington, D.C.

Family, Career and Community Leaders of America is unique among youth organizations because its programs and planned and run by members. It is the only career and technical in-school student organization with the family as its central focus. Participation in national programs and chapter activities helps members become strong leaders in their families, careers, and communities.

HHS sponsor for the organization traveling with Ladrecus was Pam Diebold.

HHS students earn “Dual Credits”

Classes are in progress at the new Technology Center at Whiteville, Brownsville campus. Haywood High School machinist students are now attending classes under the direction of instructor Jared Arnold.

Six Haywood High School students are earning dual credits this year with the opening of the new Tennessee Technology Center at Whiteville, Brownsville campus in the Brownsville-Haywood County Industrial Park this fall.

These HHS juniors and seniors, after being selected through an application process, were able to enroll in the Machine Tool Technology class at the center. Students will receive high school credits as well as credits that will apply at the center if they continue taking classes there. Career and Technical Director Rhonda Thompson coordinates the program at HHS.

And the program is free to the students. Their expenses are covered by the Naifeh-Wilder Scholarships, lottery funds set aside to be used by students who attend technical centers across the state.

In addition, Haywood County Schools Director George Chapman approved the use of school transportation for the students.

“We are very excited our students have the opportunity to take advantage of these classes,” Thompson said. “Students who earn certification in this program will be trained to hold high wage, highly skilled jobs in this field. People with these skills are in high demand in the job market,” she added.

The center will hold an open house Tuesday, October 10, at 2 p.m., and the public is invited to attend.

Haywood County student golfers make their mark in the state

The HHS golf teams had a winning season this year. In district play at the Brownsville Country Club, Tom Tipton, a senior, placed first with a score of 75. The team won the district tournament and advanced to regional play where both the girls’ and boys’ teams lost, but four Haywood High golfers’ scores advanced them to the state tourney.

Tom Tipton, Russ English, Alston Owen and Leah Taylor competed against young golfers from across the state in the A-AA State Tournament on October 17 and 18 at Old Fort Golf Course in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. Tom Tipton tied for eighth place overall scoring a tournament total of 152. Russ English had a tournament total of 164; Alston Owen, 166.

Watkins nominated for All-American Bowl

HHS football stand-out Alex Watkins received word that he has been nominated to play in the U. S. Army’s All-American Bowl. He is one of 400 high school students throughout the nation to receive the honor, and only 80 will be chosen to play in the post-season game. Presenting the notification to him on September 1 at HHS was U. S. Army Recruiter for HHS Staff Sergeant Green. Standing by for the announcement was HHS Coach Bart Stowe.
