Brief Notes
Doris Battle, Editor

Welcome to a new year

It is my pleasure to welcome all Haywood County students to the 2008-2009 school year. As interim director, I realize the great responsibility our school system has in shaping the lives of the children. We hope all students have settled into their classrooms and are looking forward to a great school year.

As you may have heard, our system made AYP during the last school year, and we are proud of the administrators, teachers and students for their hard work. This is an ongoing challenge for us all, and you should know that our administrators are ever vigilant in doing what needs to be done to continue this trend in our schools.

I have visited all the schools this year and always enjoy seeing all the children at work and at play. It’s part of our job to provide not only academic training in our schools but also lessons in good behavior, social interaction, the arts, music, and athletics. Each school is providing healthy food choices and exercise opportunities for the students to promote a healthier lifestyle and opportunities to learn through hands-on experiences in many different areas. We want our schools to be a well-rounded learning experience for all children.

So, to all the students and their families, let’s join together for another year to give our children an exceptional educational experience. It’s the most important thing we can do for them and for our community.

HHS celebrates Homecoming 2007

Voted as the 2007 HHS Homecoming Queen was Chardae Henley. First maid was Kerri Berger (right) and second maid was Morgan Henry.

Haywood High School celebrated Homecoming 2007 on November 2 with a “Haunted Haywood” theme. While the floats were a bit “tricky,” the Tomcats win over Ripley in their last regular season game was a real treat as were the chosen class representatives and Homecoming Court when they were presented during halftime ceremonies.

Selected as Homecoming Queen was Chardae Henley, daughter of Teresa Grandberry. First maid was Kerri Berger, niece of Marty and Judy Zalte, and second maid was Morgan Henry, daughter of William and Patricia Logan. Other members of the court were Kamrie Antwine, daughter of Scott and Angela Antwine; Joveyance Johnson, daughter of Dwight and Sarita Johnson; and Megan Perry, daughter of David and Tonie Perry.

Class representatives were freshman, Hannah Flood and Destinee Turner; sophomore, Giavante Jones and Destinee Douglas; junior, Angelica Gunn and Kanesha Pickens; and senior, Morgan Dennis and Melanie Dennis.

The seniors won the overall class competitions, but the juniors placed first in the float division with their “Thriller” float.

HHS benefits from InSouth Bank T-shirt sale

InSouth Bank employees present HHS Principal Robert Mitchell and Assistant Principal Jim Frazier (fourth and fifth from the left) with a check for $971 to be shared among the various athletic and academic Booster Clubs at Haywood High. The money came from the Bank’s sale of Tomcat Pride T-Shirts during the Hatchie Fall Fest. T-Shirts are still available for $15 each at InSouth’s main office on South Washington. Presenting the check are InSouth employees (from left) Judy Westover, JoAnne Finn, Tim Stokely, Emily Davis and Becky Overton.

Twenty-seven HHS students inducted into the National Beta Club

HHS Senior Beta Club members are Kamrie Antwine, Marquita Bond, Chris Bradford, Carlisla Byars, Kelsey Collins, Shanel Crawford-Harris, John Dahlhauser, Melanie Dennis, Morgan Dennis, Alex Edwards, Randall Elrod, Joanie Evans, Maggie Gardner, Savannah German, Jessica Hendrix, Ellen Hudson, Emily Jackson, Kiatra Jones, Tequitta King, Christopher Kirkpatrick, Jessica Ligon, Adam Marlar, Brett Stoots, Ricky Taylor, Trevor Williams and Sharnice Woods.

New members of the HHS Beta Club are Rachel Baggett, Jalissa Bond, Kanesha Bond, Candace Brown, Hunter Burroughs, Haley Chrisman, Kenya Clark, Kelsey Currie, John Evans, Marisa Franklin, Al Hardaway, Shenetric Harris, Quentin Hubbard, Veronica Kinnon, Trey McAdams, Raven McKinnie, Kaitlin Morris, Gabrielle Odeneal, Alston Owen, Kanesha Pickens, Jaclyn Pillow, Turner Riddle, Andrea Smith, Santeia Taylor, Jessica Thomas, and Ronesha Wilkins and (not pictured) Leah Taylor.

Senior members of the Haywood High School Chapter of the National Beta Club inducted 27 new members into their club in the HHS library on October 18. With an audience of nearly 200 parents, faculty members, school board members, and friends, the club officers directed the induction procedure for the new members. President Melanie Dennis administered the Beta Club pledge, as each inductee held a lighted candle and repeated the pledge. Vice-president Kelsey Collins explained the importance of achievement, Secretary Jessica Ligon explained the development of character in Beta Club members, and Ellen Hudson outlined the various service projects in which the club participates each year. Treasurer Ricky Taylor was unable to attend because of an athletic commitment.

The program began with the Pledge of Allegiance, led by Trevor Williams, and was followed by a devotional message by Chris Bradford. Savannah German explained the criteria for membership in the club. Then each new member was greeted by a senior member and pinned with a Beta Club gold ribbon. The family members of each inductee stood as their inductee was recognized.

Principal Robert Mitchell congratulated the new members and their parents and encouraged them to continue their positive attitudes as school leaders at HHS. After adjournment, a reception was held for new members and their parents.

HHS Beta Club sponsors are HHS teachers Glynn Bridgewater, Gail Chapman, and George Norvell.

Professional Development for Educators

Pictured left during educator development studies at Haywood High School were Robert Mitchell, Lilah Hall-Norell, Tracy Mitchell, Josephine Crenshaw, Gail Chapman, Michelle Tillman, Sheri Richards, Jim Frazier, John Cunningham, Greg Grimsley, Joel Hayes, Bethany Oldham, Elizabeth Guth, Mamie Converse, and Chanda Franks.

The Haywood High School faculty, staff, and administration enjoyed a day of professional development recently, while students enjoyed a break from the classroom. HHS has received a commendation for being one of only a few schools across the state to conduct a focused book study for the entire faculty and administration for the duration of the school term. This school year marks the second time that HHS educators have focused on one book during professional development days. The current book being analyzed is Results Now! by Mike Schmoker. Teachers and administrators are studying cutting-edge strategies that will impact student achievement.

HHS JROTC wins title

More than 200 high school Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) cadets representing Army, Marine Corps and Air Force Units gathered at L.Z. Hurley Memorial Field for an afternoon of drill and ceremonies competition on October 4.

JROTC units from Liberty High School in Jackson , South Panola, Miss., High School, New Albany, Miss., High School, Oxford Miss., High School, Ripley High School, Lexington High School, and Haywood High School participated in the HHS Invitational Drill Meet sponsored by the Tennessee National Guard. Members of the Guard served as judges for the meet.

Competition was divided into six categories: Color Guard, Open Ranks Inspection, Armed Regulation Drill, Unarmed Regulation Drill, Unarmed Exhibition Drill, and Armed Exhibition Drill.

Haywood High School won first place in Open Ranks Inspection, first place in Unarmed Regulation Drill, and fourth place in Armed Regulation Drill. The combined scores of these wins gave Haywood the top score of the meet and made them the Overall Team Championship Trophy for the meet.

This meet was a first for cadets at HHS because it is the first time that the cadets planned, administered, and ran the entire event. They were allowed to ask advice from regular Air Force staff, but the cadets had to do all the work themselves. “This was a great opportunity for the cadets to exercise their leadership ability and improve their skills in group dynamics in order to complete a project,” said Lt. Col. Mark Avery, Senior JROTC Instructor at HHS.

“Their job of coordinating the meet and making sure everything ran as scheduled had little room for error because the Haywood Junior High School Homecoming activities were scheduled on the field just as soon as the drill meet was over. Everything ran according to the cadets' timetable and the field was ready as scheduled. They did an outstanding job.”
