HHS construction students build flags for
“field”

Kenneth Emerson’s Construction Technology class in the Haywood
High School Career and Technology Division helped the Exchange
Club with the Fields of Flags project this year. The students
cut the poles, drilled holes attached flags and put on the caps.
John Joyner’s agriculture class cut rebar and welded “rebar
drivers” just for this event. Emerson’s Construction Core
classes (mostly freshmen) loaded up on the bus Friday morning,
October 31, and by 9:45 had erected the 242 flags.
The Construction Technology program at the High School focuses
on the academics and mechanics of the construction industry.
Students apply the theories learned in other classes to
practical applications. A key component of the class is
Leadership: Students will demonstrate leadership, citizenship,
and teamwork skills required for success in the school,
community, and workplace. The program’s goals are to educate the
students to be well-rounded, productive members of society.

and a win

The Haywood High School Class of 2009 held its own
in the homecoming tradition by winning first place in the overall
scoring of contests, marking the annual football celebration of
the Tomcats. And to top that, HHS has a new homecoming queen and
the Tomcats won a thrilling game in a second overtime.

In the float division, juniors won first place;
seniors, second; freshmen, third; and sophomores, fourth. Placing
first in the pep rally competition was the seniors; second was the
sophomores; third, the juniors; and fourth, the freshmen.

New this year was a canned goods collection that
will provide food for clients of the Mustard Seed and the Carl
Perkins Center. The seniors placed first; freshmen, second,
juniors, third; and sophomores, fourth. Students also collected
can tabs which the school’s Future Business Leaders of America
will send to the Ronald McDonald House in Memphis. The freshmen
collected the most with the seniors, juniors and sophomores
following behind.

Points were awarded in all the categories, giving
the seniors first place; the juniors, second; the freshmen, third;
and the sophomores, fourth.
