HHS students learn from visit to Dauphin
Island

In October, Haywood High School students with an
interest in science had an opportunity to go on the Dauphin
Island trip. These students spent a week in Dauphin Island,
Alabama, a barrier reef, learning biology lessons, ranging from
squid dissection to oceanography.
The first activity was a visit to an alligator farm where
students saw alligators from 5 inches to 15 feet long. Students
participated in many labs and visited many historical sights.
They collected plankton and studied it under a microscope in a
plankton lab.
Captain Rodney and the AE Veril, a fishing boat took students
for a ride where they saw the many diverse species that are
found in the ocean. Most students began every day watching the
sunrise from the pier, and the group concluded the last night by
watching the sunset. It was a great trip that provided hands-on
learning and fun, the students said.

Haywood High School to hold Scholastic Book
Fair
By Julie Dahlhauser, HHS Librarian

The public is invited to Haywood High School’s
Scholastic Book Fair, which will be held in the library the week
of Nov. 16-20, from 7:45 to 3:30 each day. The Book Fair will
feature a wide variety of books specifically selected to appeal
to middle and high school interests, including Stephenie Meyer’s
Twilight series and the Bluford High books. In addition, the
fair will have adult bestsellers as well as multicultural
titles, gift and holiday items.
All proceeds will benefit the Haywood High School
Library. Visitors are welcome any time during the day. Please
stop by the main office and check in.
As students grow older, it is so important to
keep books in their lives. Students who remain readers now are
more likely to be lifelong learners. Readers develop larger
vocabularies, a greater knowledge of the world, and higher
academic achievement. In fact, studies indicate that being a
reader is more predictive of success than intelligence, economic
background, or gender.
The HHS Library Club has been involved in the
planning and running of the Book Fair and has put much time and
energy into creating a special event. We hope you will reward
their efforts by making their first ever Book Fair a big
success.

Spirits high during HHS Homecoming week

Although it did actually rain on the Haywood High School
Homecoming parade, it didn’t dampen the spirits of the students
who continued to celebrate “inside” all week. The theme this
year, “Haywood Goes Hollywood” had students dressing up one day
as their favorite celebrity. On other days they wore their
favorite team shirts, purple and white, and their class colors.
Each class decorated a hall, and all of these activities were
part of the week’s competitions to see which class would win the
week overall. Also in the contest were the floats. Each class
chose a movie theme, and the seniors’ “Final Destination”
rollercoaster earned them first place.

Then on Friday, when the parade was cancelled, students gathered
in the gymnasium for other contests and a pep rally. Overall,
the seniors won the competitions, but each class was well
represented. The finale, of course, was the Tomcats’ win over
the Covington Chargers on Friday night. The Homecoming Royalty
will be presented at the game on Friday, October 23, which is
also Senior Night. The floats will also be on display that night
at L. Z. Hurley Memorial Field.
