HHS FCLA busy “serving”

FCCLA students as teachers helping in the classroom at Sunny Hill
Elementary.
Students in the Family Career and
Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) organization at Haywood High
School Career and Technical Division are participating this week
in the “National Learn and Serve Challenge.” This challenge is a
weeklong series of local, state and national events designed to
raise awareness and public support for service-learning.

teachers read the books of the younger students to them.
What is service-learning? It is a
teaching methodology that combines academic, work skills,
character and behavioral learning with hands-on volunteer service.
This teaching method has been proven effective for reaching youth
at risk of academic failure and dropping out.

HHS Family and Consumer Science
students are members of the FCCLA organizations, and they actively
pursue service opportunities. Among other activities they perform,
students volunteer to serve as tutors and mentors for elementary
students in the local school system.

One of the high school students who
participated in this program said, “It was a wonderful experience
for me. The look on the child’s face when they finally understood
their work was priceless.” In addition to helping the students,
the volunteers from FCCLA helped teachers with bulletin boards,
grading papers, making up games and cleaning the classrooms. This
program offers benefits for the elementary students as well as the
high school students who learn important life lessons from their
volunteer efforts and gain self-esteem from a sense of
accomplishment and the interaction with small children who look up
to the high school students.

HHS Students literally climbed
the wall

The National Guard rock climbing wall was a popular event with the
students in Haywood High School during AYP Celebration Day. A
number of students quickly stepped forward to accept the challenge
and several students made it all the way to the top.
HHS Sports
The Haywood High Tomcats – in all
sports – have been hard at work this fall representing the school
and honing their skills to capture a winning record. All have not
been successful – but their efforts have made them winners anyway.
Volleyball

Lady Tomcats Volleyball
The 2007-08 Haywood High School volleyball team members are Kendra
Jones, Rachel Smith, LaKesha Vaughn, Charrie Boyd, Jamie Shutes,

is Zan Jones, and her assistant is Jason Winfrey.
The young HHS volleyball team,
coached by Zandra Jones, is close to the end of their season,
posting 4 wins and 12 losses.
Soccer

The Lady Tomcat soccer team, for
the first year under the direction of Coach Catherine Patterson,
is also in a rebuilding year and has only one more game in regular
season play. The team holds a 0-13-2 season record.
Cross Country
The HHS Cross Country team will be
going into district play soon. They haven’t won any meets, but
have had several team members to place in the top 20 in the
competitions.
Golf

The HHS Golf teams have had a
successful season. The girls took second place in the district
with a team score of 185 and advanced to the Region 8 tournament.
Leah Taylor led the Haywood girls with a 90, followed by Morgan
Dennis with a 95 and Maggie Gardner with a 97.

Haywood’s boys placed fifth in the
district. Although the team did not advance to the region contest,
Alston Owen, who led the Haywood boys’ team with an 81, will play
as an individual. John Evans was second with a 90, and Colton Keen
and Taylor Dedmon tied for third place on the Haywood team with
scores of 92 each. Coaching the HHS golf teams is Kavin Carr. (see
story below)
Football

And the HHS Tomcats – freshman,
junior varsity and varsity football – are seeing great success
this year in their seasons. The freshman squad has a 5-0 record
and the junior varsity a 2-0-1 record. The coaches for these teams
are Bronson Bradley, Terrence Beard and Shane Britt.
The varsity team is shining bright
this year with a 5-1 record with four more games to go before
district competition. Head Coach is Bart Stowe, and his assistants
are Matthew Shearon and Tim Seymore and the freshman and junior
varsity coaches.

And where would our athletes be without those cheering for the
Purple and White.

Go Tomcats!
Go, Tomcats!

Tomcat pep rally in the gym brought AYP Celebration Day to a close
at Haywood High School as the students were given a short day that
led to a long weekend, beginning with Tomcat football Friday
night.
A break in the action

There is time-out on the floor during some three-legged basketball
and time in for a photo session with these scoreboard operators.
The action took place in the Haywood High School gym during AYP
Celebration Day Friday morning.
HHS holds open house

Haywood High School held its open house on August 21 to welcome
students and parents to a new school year. Principal Robert
Mitchell spoke to the group in the gym before inviting everyone to
visit the cafeteria for refreshments and to see displays from each
department in the school. HHS Career and Technical Division Video
students produced their first video, a “Welcome to HHS,” that
everyone seemed to enjoy.

HHS JROTC cadets presented the colors at the open house.

Entertaining open house attendees were members of the HHS Show
Choir, directed by Michelle Tillman.

Among the special
guests at the HHS Open House were Haywood School Board members,
including Joe Barden IV, who is pictured here talking to a parent.

Nunn attends TGSAS

Pictured with William Nunn are (left) Dr. Jerry Gresham, Director
of the Tennessee Governor's School for the Agricultural Sciences (TGSAS),
and Dr. Joey Melhorn, the TGSAS Assistant Director.
William Nunn, son of Alice and Jim Nunn of
Brownsville, graduated June 29 from the 4th Tennessee Governor’s
School for the Agricultural Sciences (TGSAS). The TGSAS was held
on the campus of the University of Tennessee at Martin, began on
May 27 and concluded on June 29. Thirty-four young men and women
from across Tennessee were part of the program. Students lived on
the campus of UTM, taking college level courses as well as
participating in field trips. One of the highlights of the
experience was a trip to Chicago, Illinois, where the scholars
toured the Chicago Board of Trade, the Federal Reserve Bank, and
the Field Museum. First State Bank also provided tickets for the
34 scholars and chaperones to go to the Chicago Cubs game on June
15.
The TGSAS is one of nine Governors Schools offered
by the Tennessee Department of Education for Tennessee high school
students. Students enrolled in the Tennessee Governor’s Schools
receive six hours of college credits for their efforts.
