HHS students dressed for success

Haywood High School Principal Robert Mitchell is
singing the praises of the school system’s new standard dress
policy. “Students have been very accepting of the new dress
policy,” he said, adding that it seems to have impacted their
attitude in a positive way. There are more than 990 students at
the high school this year, with more than 220 seniors working
toward graduation in May 2009. This group of Media Concepts
students are preparing their voices to run the school’s radio
station, WNWS 1520AM, when it hits the airwaves in the next few
weeks.
Tomcat Roundup a success

The Haywood High School Tomcat Roundup was a
success Monday afternoon, July 28, as about two-thirds of the
expected almost 300 freshman visited Haywood High for orientation
and dinner. The north side of the gymnasium was full of new
students and parents as Rhonda Thompson, Director of the HHS
Career and Technical Division, spoke to the group about coming to
HHS. Afterwards, teachers took students to their homerooms, then
they toured the school, before meeting in the cafeteria for
hamburgers and hotdogs and all the trimmings. At the orientation
students received their schedules, lockers and a planner. HHS
Teachers were also on hand to greet the students, serve them
dinner and give out door prizes. The first day of school will be a
half-day for students on Tuesday, August 5.

Ray Jones to coach HHS basketball

Almost 30-year veteran educator and basketball coach in the
Haywood School System Ray Jones has taken the head basketball
coaching position at Haywood High School. “I look forward to
leading a program that has a great tradition and such a rich
heritage in high school athletics,” he said.
Doris Battle, Haywood County Schools Interim
Director, announced on July 11 that Haywood Junior High basketball
coach Ray Jones has been selected as the new boys’ basketball
coach at Haywood High School. Coach Jones fills the position
vacated by Coach Winston Varnado, who resigned at the end of the
last school year to take a similar position at West Point High
School in West Point, Mississippi.
Battle said the decision was a difficult one,
especially when the decision came down between two finalists,
Assistant Coach Jason Winfrey and Coach Ray Jones, both natives of
Haywood County and coaches in the Haywood County School System.
“Coach Jones brings a very positive image to the
program and is a role model whose reputation, influence and work
ethics will be great not only for the HHS basketball program but
for the school and community as well,” Battle said.
Coach Jones is a native of Haywood County and
received his elementary and secondary education in the Haywood
County School System. He is the son of late Nolen and Martha
Jones. His father worked for many years and retired from
Edenton-Lamb, a grocery wholesaler in Brownsville, and his mother,
Martha, was a home economics teacher at Haywood High School.
He is a 1974 graduate of Haywood High School where
he excelled in basketball and played the position of center from
1972 through 1974 under the tutelage of Coach Joe Dan Wooten.
During his senior season, the Tomcats went 31-4 and were
runners-up in the state.
After graduation, Jones attended Tennessee State
University and received a bachelor of science degree in health and
physical education and a master’s degree in agricultural sciences.
He completed his college requirements in December 1978, and in
March 1979 began teaching at Haywood High School.
He served as an assistant coach under Coach Dwight
Waller from 1979 until 1984. During that time, he also coached the
freshmen team at HHS and continued in that position until 1993
when he moved to Haywood Junior High School as basketball coach.
He coached the Haywood High freshmen team for 12 years.
Jones also taught for a few years at Sunny Hill and
even began a basketball program at the school. In fact, for almost
30 years, it would be practically impossible to find an area of
basketball within the Haywood County school system that never
encountered the footprints of Coach Jones.
In 1993, he transferred to Haywood Junior High
where he coached, at one time or another, both boys and girls
teams. During a coaching career that covered about 11 years with
the Haywood Junior High Warriors, Jones compiled an overall record
of 157 wins and 55 loses. His record as the girls’ coach was 104
wins and 37 losses and as the boys’ coach, he compiled a record of
53-18. Jones was awarded “Coach of the Year” eight times and won
six divisions championships and six West Tennessee Athletic
Conference (WTAC) championships while at Haywood Junior High.
He resides in Haywood County with his wife,
Miranda, who is a teacher at East Side Elementary. They have two
adult children, Jamila and Bradley.
“I am thankful to the good Lord and for the
confidence placed in me that allows the opportunity to fulfill a
longstanding goal of coaching the Haywood High Tomcats,” Jones
said. “I look forward to leading a program that has a great
tradition and such a rich heritage in high school athletics.”
