Warriors complete successful track season

The Haywood Junior High Track and Field team recently completed
its season. Throughout the spring, weather was a problem for all
outdoor sports; however, the team still managed to break 11 school
records. It was a productive year with many personal and team
accomplishments for both the Warriors and Lady Warriors who were
coached by computer teacher, Ray Clark.
The old track jerseys had been used for several years, thus the
guys and girls were thrilled when they received a surprise gift of
new uniforms. The new blue uniforms with a white side stripe were
bought by an anonymous community member from Brownsville. “We
don’t know who paid for the new uniforms, but my students looked
great and ran fast in them,” Coach Clark said. “The team is very
appreciative and would like to thank our mystery donor and track
fan.”
The next to the last meet was at Dyersburg on April 23. The D.H.S.
“Big Kahuna” Track Meet is an invitational meet for junior high
and middle schools from all around West Tennessee. In this meet
the girls finished with the third-place trophy while the boys
finished with the award for second place.
On April 30 the teams competed in the West Tennessee Athletic
Conference Championships. The WTAC includes 14 West Tennessee
junior high or middle schools. The girls finished in sixth place,
and the boys managed to finish in third place. Six members were
selected to the WTAC All-Conference Team. They were Diamond
Robinson, Felicia Ingram, Dominique Adams, Dwayne Turner, Jerry
Bradford, and Will Joyner. Will Joyner was the Meet’s most
productive athlete by scoring 26 points more than any other single
student in attendance.
Other members of the HJH track and Field team are: David Castro,
Demarcus Coney, Jonathan Gayden, Troy Hamilton, Willis Hardaway,

Haywood Junior High holds Knowledge Bowl
As a precursor to TCAP, seventh- and eighth-grade
students at Haywood Junior
High School spent the week of April 9 competing against one
another in the school’s fourth annual TCAP Knowledge Bowl.
Students in both grades answered a daily question each morning and
afternoon to accumulate points for the week. The seventh graders
accumulated 1,500 points through daily questions, and the eighth
graders accumulated 1,490.

In addition to daily questions, students also
participated in a new program through the library called Reading
Counts. In this program, students were given the opportunity to
choose a book, read it, and take a test over it in order to gain
more points for their grade. Students did a phenomenal job through
their reading and literature classes, with a final result of the
seventh grade gaining an extra 1,057 points and the eighth grade
gaining 1,338 extra points.

The last leg of the competition consisted of a
Jeopardy game in which students racked up more points for their
respective grades. Jeopardy was the mystery factor in our scores,
keeping the students in suspense until TCAP was finished. The
results of the Jeopardy game truly made the winner this year. The
seventh graders played it safe, moving from the lowest-value
questions to the higher ones. They walked away with 11,900 points
added to their final score. The eighth graders, on the other hand,
took more of a risk by beginning with higher-value questions.
Therefore, when their Double Jeopardy question rolled around, they
had more to wager and wound up with a total score of 22,200.

When all points had been accumulated, the
seventh-grade students had an outstanding 14,457 points, but the
eighth-grade students surpassed them with a tremendous 25,028
points. The eighth graders are going to have the opportunity to
participate in a fun-filled field day Friday, April 27, as a
result of their win.
The Knowledge Bowl competition was designed with
the intention of getting students motivated to do their best on
TCAP, and the questions they received during the week made them
think about what they could expect on the actual tests. “We at HJH
are proud of all of our students for their hard work and
determination. They make HJH a great place to be!” HJH Principal
Donte Bradford said.
Parents learn at HJH TCAP Night
Parents were invited to a fun-filled evening of
hands-on learning activities designed by teachers in math,
science, language/reading, social studies, and physical education,
music, art, computer. The purpose was to inform parents and
students of the skills the state will be testing from April 16-20
during TCAP week, and to strengthen their child’s comprehension.
Children who came and brought their parents
received three extra points on their final six-weeks grade in
math, language, science and social studies. More importantly,
parental presence expressed their support, interest, and their
desire for their child’s academic success.
Attending were 318 parents and students. Activities
ranged from a Jeopardy social studies competition, which simulated
the actual TV game show, to a world geography floor quiz,
exothermic reactions, decimal/fraction conversions, M/M bar
graphs, analogies and Reading Olympics, cellular structure using
electronic microscopes, sentence combining, and physical
education, music, art, computer Tic-Tac-Toe.
