HJH students honored for achievement on the Duke University TIP

Nineteen seventh-grade students at Haywood Junior High School qualified to participate in the Duke University Talent Identification Program. To qualify, a student must score at or above the 95th percentile on the national norms of a standardized achievement test. A student may qualify in one of three areas: mathematics, verbal, or total battery. To participate in the program, a student must take the ACT or SAT, tests that are designed for college-bound high school students.

Eleven students participated in the program. Students who scored at or above the national average of high school juniors or seniors on at least one part of the SAT or the ACT qualified for State Recognition. Qualifying for State Recognition were Emma Baumheckel, Alyssa Campbell, Will Clinton, Dannon Eubanks, Robbyn Pocock, Mireya Pulido, Kyle Sills, Ryan Watson, and Spencer Zeigler. Students who scored as well or better than 90 percent of high school juniors or seniors qualified for Grand Recognition. Qualifying for Grand Recognition were Emma Baumheckel and Ryan Watson.

Officer James Watson provided pizza for the students as a treat.

HJH students join the “Go Green” movement

Haywood Jr. High celebrated St. Patrick’s Day by “going green.” Student Council members spent the day collecting recyclable items during homeroom and lunch shifts. The study body and faculty supported the “going green” cause by wearing green shirts and jeans.
