Career exploration classes visit U of M Engineering College

On Friday, November 21, Herff Engineering College at the University of Memphis opened its doors to some very excited and career-minded students of Haywood Junior High School. The Career Explorations classes of Ms. Nicole Bond, Ms. Pat Harwell, and Ms. Sarita Johnson spent a day taking guided tours of the engineering labs that included measurement of an EKG and using infrared wavelengths, making biodiesel fuel out of vegetable oil, and seeing an industrial robot in action.

The industrial robot made a business card holder in under five minutes out of a block of plastic as a present for Ms. Bond. Students were able to design their own web page and see how the depletion of well water affects our ecosystem. In addition, students toured forensics labs and got to see how to test the psi of concrete columns used in buildings and bridges. Representatives of Fed Ex were on hand to give the students souvenirs from their trip to the Herff Engineering College and to talk with them about future career opportunities at Fed Ex. Students were able to see first hand how careers in engineering and technology affect the word around them. Dr. John Hockestein will be following up with the students by taking a trip to HJH next spring.

HJH students compete in WHIZ Wednesdays

WHIZ Wednesdays is back in full swing at HJH this year with broadcasters helping to promote academic achievement throughout the school. It is a fun method for reinforcing TCAP skills. It starts in November and begins with a short video that is channeled into every classroom television on Wednesday mornings. The short videos are of student broadcasters, selected through try-outs, portraying news reporters. They offer information and entertainment to motivate the students to want to read. Following the video, the student body is given a short reading passage with questions. The students who answer all questions correctly will have a chance to win prizes.

Serving as broadcasters are Jamaica Bond, Tiara Boyd, Caleb Glidewell, Matthew Hooper, Aliceson Hobock, Angelica Jackson, Michelle Leal, Sarah Lewis, Molly McAdams, Morgan Marlar, Ashley Meyers, April Miller, Mary Drake Owen, Josh Perry, Emily Pugh, Billy Rapier, Marcea Stark, Myesha Stone, Jasmine Taylor, Bria Thomas, Precious Walker, Cortez Williams, Shana Williams, Ciera Woods and Emily Wright.

Winners in the competition, who received Sonic gift cards, were Payton Jarrett, Tabitha Parsons, Molly McAdams, Daniel Williams, and Noryani Perez.
