Brief Notes
Doris Battle, Editor

Welcome to a new year

It is my pleasure to welcome all Haywood County students to the 2008-2009 school year. As interim director, I realize the great responsibility our school system has in shaping the lives of the children. We hope all students have settled into their classrooms and are looking forward to a great school year.

As you may have heard, our system made AYP during the last school year, and we are proud of the administrators, teachers and students for their hard work. This is an ongoing challenge for us all, and you should know that our administrators are ever vigilant in doing what needs to be done to continue this trend in our schools.

I have visited all the schools this year and always enjoy seeing all the children at work and at play. It’s part of our job to provide not only academic training in our schools but also lessons in good behavior, social interaction, the arts, music, and athletics. Each school is providing healthy food choices and exercise opportunities for the students to promote a healthier lifestyle and opportunities to learn through hands-on experiences in many different areas. We want our schools to be a well-rounded learning experience for all children.

So, to all the students and their families, let’s join together for another year to give our children an exceptional educational experience. It’s the most important thing we can do for them and for our community.

Rickman creates Haywood Schools Banner

Haywood Junior High School art teacher Anita Rickman was the creator of the Haywood County Schools banner in 2007. The stair-step design that says “The Sky is the Limit – Successful Students: Endless Possibilities” was featured at the Tennessee School Board Association Leadership Conference and Convention in November. Banners from school systems across the state are on display and depict the theme of the convention.

The Haywood Junior High Lady Warrior, who completed their season with 16 wins against two losses, were the number one seed when they met Dyersburg Middle School for the West Tennessee Athletic Conference (WATC) championship in January. According to Coach Jones, this was one of the most exciting games of his career.

The game was tight in the first quarter and the Lady Warriors carried a 26-17 lead into the locker room at halftime. The game was fairly even in the third quarter.

Dyersburg rallied in the fourth quarter and wiped out a 10-point Haywood lead and tied the game with seven seconds left on the clock. Haywood took possession of the ball. Jaleshia Bell brought the ball down court and took a shot. She missed with four seconds remaining on the clock. Lady Warrior Trinity Jackson controlled the rebound and took a shot and was fouled with one second left on the clock and the game tied at 44-44. Coach Jones called a time out. Jackson missed her first free throw, and Coach Jones called another time out. Jackson scored with her second shot and the final score was a 45-44 victory. The Lady Warriors left Covington as the 2003-04 Conference champions.

Two Lady Warriors scored in double figures. Jasmine Phillips had 14 points, and Chelsey Owens scored 12 points. Jelisa Bell scored 7 points and Trinity Jackson and Ida Parish each scored 6 points.

Lady Warriors making the all-tournament team were Jasmine Phillips, Jelisha Bell, and Chelsey Owens, who was also selected as the Most Valuable Player.

All-Conference selections were Jasmine Phillips, Jalisa Bell, and Itianna Shirley. Coach Jones was selected as the WATC Coach of the Year.

The Lady Warriors advanced to the West Tennessee Sectional Tournament held at White Station in Memphis last Monday night. They took on a tough Havenview team and came out on the losing end by a score of 56-39.

Ray Jones is Coach of the Year

Haywood Junior High School Coach Ray Jones was recently selected as the West Tennessee Athletic Conference (WATC) Coach of the Year. Coach Jones led his team to the WATC Conference championship, where his Lady Warriors defeated Dyersburg Middle School for the championship. Coach Jones began his coaching career in 1979 at Haywood High School. He moved to the Junior High School in 1993-94 and took the boys’ team to a WATC Championship with a 20-0 record.

Local banker talks to HJH business finance students

Mr. Nick Nichols, First State Bank Community Bank President in Brownsville, spoke to the Haywood Junior High School business finance students on January 31. He covered statistics regarding identity theft and tips to prevent it. The business finance classes last for two six weeks and are new this year. Seventh-grade math teachers Merry Bond, Jane Jameson, and Steve Svebakken, teach the classes.

Students learn science can be fun and exciting

Students at Haywood Junior High School were treated to a novel approach to make learning about science a fun-filled experience. In the picture above, James Steele, Alexis Branch, and Connor Dorian participate in a fun experiment in the physics of conductive objects, insulators, and static electricity.

A Mobile Data Center (MDC) classroom rolled onto the Haywood Junior High School parking lot recently and proceeded to provide two days of fun-filled learning adventures for HJH students. A Mobile Data Center is one of several self-contained classrooms with seating for 40 or more students that travels throughout the United States with the purpose of furthering interest in math and science.

The National Science Center (NSC) is a partnership between National Science Center, Inc., a non-profit organization, and the United States Army. NSC’s mission is to be a catalyst that excites America's youth about math, science and technology.

NSC promotes science and mathematics education for all ages nationwide and motivates students to seek careers in technology and engineering. One of their educational outreach vehicles is the Mobile Discovery Center program. Designed to literally take science on the road, each MDC unit is a mobile classroom housed in an 18-wheeler trailer. Staffed by Army personnel and civilians who work for the Army, the MDC units travel across the country, presenting programs designed to show young people that studying science and math is fun as well as essential to their future. The MDC is offered as a free service provided by the National Science Center and the U. S. Army.
