City Mayor speaks to HJH students

On Monday, January 12, Mayor Webb Banks stopped by
Haywood Junior High School to visit possible future politicians of
the county. Students in the Career Explorations classes had many
questions about how Mayor Banks came to be a mayor and his plans
for the future. Mayor Banks captivated his audience with his tales
of traveling abroad while serving in the military and funny
stories about owning Bank’s Railroad Salvage Furniture store. In
addition to explaining the day-to-day operations of being a city
mayor, Mayor Banks explained the branches of city government and
compared and contrasted the city government structure of West
Tennessee versus Middle Tennessee and East Tennessee.
HJH announces top spellers

Haywood Junior High School recently held its annual
Spelling Bee, and six students, three from the seventh grade and
three from the eighth grade, were the winning spellers. In the
seventh grade, first place went to Jalen Smith, second place went
to Arrian Springfield, and third place to Kiarra Moore. In the
eighth grade, Bria Thomas was the top speller, and O’Neal Jones
and Stephen McCuller earned second and third place, respectively.
HJH students learn from local guest speakers

Future reporters from the Haywood Junior High School Career
Explorations classes of Ms. Nicole Bond and Ms. Pat Harwell had
the privilege to learn about the life of a news reporter through a
visit by Jerry Wilson who works for the States-Graphic. He shared
his many experiences of being a reporter with the students in
December. The students had many questions and tried to get Mr.
Wilson to divulge his secret sources, but for once, the reporter
had “no comment.”

Also in December, HJH students enjoyed a visit by Lisa Carlton,
Community President of First State Bank, when she spoke to
students about the many careers available in the banking industry.
Mrs. Carlton presented the students with a list of courses that
they can take at Haywood High School that will help them prepare
for one of those careers. In addition, Mrs. Carlton invited the
students to visit her bank for a first-hand look at what
procedures are involved in the day-to-day operations of a
community bank.
HJH Student Council helps with community project

This year several Haywood Junior High School
Student Council members were involved in a community service
project that focused on helping the needy citizens of Haywood
County. Every year Brownsville Radio and County Mayor Franklin
Smith raise money to provide Christmas baskets for the needy in
Haywood County, and it takes lots of volunteers to put the baskets
of food and toys together. So Student Council members from HJH
helped Mayor Smith and a group of dedicated volunteers, led by
Mrs. Vicki Sullivan, assemble gift bundles. This was a wonderful
opportunity for the students to participate in an event that
showcases the true meaning of the holiday season. The students who
participated were Caleb Glidewell, Ross Houghton, Emily Pugh,
Katlyn Saxon, and Shannon Walls.
