Elizabeth Carlson HJH Teacher of the Year


Elizabeth Carlson

Selected as the Haywood Junior High School Teacher of the Year is Elizabeth Jane Carlson. She has taught seventh-grade social studies for the last three of her five years of teaching.

Ms. Carlson graduated magna cum laude from Union University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Learning Foundations. She taught eighth-grade literature at HJH before social studies. She served as a supervising student teacher in the Fall of 2009 and conducted an inservice in a new teacher’s orientation session.

Ms. Carlson is active in Fellowship Baptist Church in Jackson, Tennessee, and participates in several outreach programs in the Jackson area. She also participated In the RIFA Thanksgiving baskets program and served in a college mentorship program.

“Elizabeth Carlson, Haywood Junior High’s Teacher of the Year, demonstrates incredible instructional skills, and goes above and beyond the call of duty for her students,” HJH Principal Dorothy Bond said. “Her loyalty and dedication is an asset to Haywood Junior High and to the teaching profession. Since I have been at HJH, she has proven to me that she is an excellent teacher and definitely a Warrior. Hats off to Liz Carlson!”

 

Ebony Clark wins D.A.R. Essay contest

Ebony Clark, a seventh grader at Haywood Junior High, won the D.A.R. Essay contest for the second year in a row. Mrs. Margaret Dyer and Ms. Jo Matherne presented Ebony with her award certificate.

 

HJH Hats for Haiti raises funds

 

 

 

Haywood Junior High students raised a total of $661 for the victims of Haiti’s devastating earthquake. Several students presented the idea of raising money over a three-day period. We ended the week with Hat Day For Haiti.

 

HJH holds annual spelling bee

HJH recently held its annual spelling bee, and the eighth-grade winners were first place, Emily Pugh; second place, Theoarrow Calhoun; and third place, Mary Smith. Seventh-grade winners were first, Jamira Jarrett; second, Lauren Markowski; and third, Ebony Clark.

Winners of the Haywood Junior High Spelling Bee will compete in the Haywood County Spelling Bee on February 5.
 

HJH students learn about a salt map

 

Mrs. Liz Carlson’s class learned to mix ingredients to construct a salt map of the state of Tennessee. Mrs. Carlson was also voted Teacher of the Year at HJH.
