Brief Notes
Doris Battle, Editor

Welcome to a new year

It is my pleasure to welcome all Haywood County students to the 2008-2009 school year. As interim director, I realize the great responsibility our school system has in shaping the lives of the children. We hope all students have settled into their classrooms and are looking forward to a great school year.

As you may have heard, our system made AYP during the last school year, and we are proud of the administrators, teachers and students for their hard work. This is an ongoing challenge for us all, and you should know that our administrators are ever vigilant in doing what needs to be done to continue this trend in our schools.

I have visited all the schools this year and always enjoy seeing all the children at work and at play. It’s part of our job to provide not only academic training in our schools but also lessons in good behavior, social interaction, the arts, music, and athletics. Each school is providing healthy food choices and exercise opportunities for the students to promote a healthier lifestyle and opportunities to learn through hands-on experiences in many different areas. We want our schools to be a well-rounded learning experience for all children.

So, to all the students and their families, let’s join together for another year to give our children an exceptional educational experience. It’s the most important thing we can do for them and for our community.

Students study DNA

These students were among those in Jerry Pyron’s eighth-grade science classes at Haywood Junior High School who “created” DNA strands as part of their study of DNA and heredity earlier this semester. The assignment was to construct a model of DNA and identify the four bases and the sugar and phosphorous - components of the model. Students learned about dominant and recessive genes – such as the differences in the genes for hair and eye color. Brown eyes and hair come from dominate genes and blue eyes and blond hair come from recessive genes.

Students enjoy “Poetry House”

Haywood Junior High School seventh- and eighth-grade literature students recently participated in a poetry coffee house project. At the coffee house, students shared poems that they had written and played poetry games while drinking hot chocolate and coffee. They also heard poems from teachers.

HJH First honor roll students rewarded

First-honor roll students at Haywood Junior High School were treated to a day at the “theatre” November 29 when they went to see “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever” at the Carl Perkins Center in Jackson. Performing were members of the Jackson Children’s and Teen Theatre. Students earning this trip were (seventh grade) Karla Cisneros, Jay Clinton, Madison Eubanks, Brionna Fields, Reeves Garrett, Devin Gibbs, Patrict Jones, Shaterica Jones, Nijaa Murray, Chelsey Owens, Taylor Primrose, Patrick Sellari, Tawana Smith, Seth Tillman, and Aaliyah Whitmore; and (eighth grade) Zachary Austin, Anna Baumheckel, Logan Eubanks, Karl Navarro, Nathan Peace, Travis Richardson, Haynes Russell, Breanne Sills, Leslie Smith, David Watts, Kierra Woods, and Lindsey Yoder. Sponsoring the trip were the school’s Partners in Education Haywood Company, Mid-South Farmers Coop, and Southwest Tennessee EMC.

HJH Basketball

The Haywood Junior High School Warriors and Lady Warriors are six games into their season with the girls winning 1 and losing 5 and the boys posting 4 wins and 2 losses. The boys beat Fayette East, Ripley, Brighton, and Munford and lost to Fayette West and Covington Crestview. The girls beat Fayette West and lost to Crestview, Fayette East, Ripley, Brighton, and Munford. They both play Fayette East again on December 11. Their 12-game season ends on January 18.

Principal Dontye Bradford named Educator of the Year

HJH Principal Dontye Bradford

Haywood Junior High School Principal Dontye Bradford was named Educator of the Year at the annual Brownsville-Haywood County Chamber of Commerce Banquet on October 26. She was taken by complete surprise by the honor she received. “I was completely floored,” Bradford said. “I wanted to cry.” But she was very appreciative of the recognition and said, “We have such a supportive community. Our directors of schools, the staff at HJH – it’s how we accomplish such good things here – by supporting each other.”

“Dedicated and focused are words that come to mind when describing this year’s Educator of the Year award recipient,” one of Mrs. Bradford’s teachers, Mary Jane Williams wrote. “Her enthusiasm is contagious and her work ethic is exemplary.”

Mrs. Bradford is a graduate of Haywood High School. She earned an undergraduate degree in elementary education from Lane College with the honor of cum laude. She received graduate degrees in curriculum and instruction and administration and supervision from the University of Memphis. She was a teacher at East Side Elementary School for 16 years before transferring to Haywood Junior High School as assistant principal. After serving in that capacity for eight years, she is currently in her fourth year as principal of Haywood Junior High.

“Bradford is extremely dedicated to her job and to the students and staff at Haywood Junior High School,” Mrs. Williams said.

As another co-worker has said, “Her goal is to help each student succeed academically and socially in order to become a productive member of our community.”

Mrs. Bradford has been said to have an unwavering focus on teaching the standards required by the federal No Child Left Behind Act. Under her leadership, Haywood Junior High has continually met the adequate yearly progress requirements of the federal government.

Yet another faculty member said that she “wants each child to feel like he or she can be successful in some way and reach his or her potential” and that she is “continually thinking of new ways in which to involve the students at some level.”

Mrs. Bradford has had past affiliations with the chamber of commerce, the Elma Ross Library Board, and several advisory boards. She is a member of Farmers Chapel C.M.E. Church and currently serves as church organist. This year’s Educator of the Year is the daughter of Joe and Avie Taylor, the proud mother of Chris, and she is the widow of Arnell Bradford.
