Brief Notes
Doris Battle, Editor

Our appreciation goes to Director of Schools George Chapman

It is certainly fitting that the June 2008 “Notebook” should be dedicated to Director of Schools George Chapman. He has led our school system since 2000, overseeing many changes with the great leadership, wisdom and the utmost dedication to the children of Haywood County.

It has been under his direction that our schools met the challenge of the No Child Left Behind directives, succeeding in making this community proud of their hard work and successes. Under his direction we have expanded our curriculum to meet the needs of all the county’s children, and we have mounted a campaign of informing and uniting all citizens behind the local school system.

The job of Director of Schools is a monumental one, because there is nothing more important than our children. Director Chapman always kept that as his motivation and encouraged his staff to raise the bar to give our children an advantage in the world they must live in after school.

I have also appreciated my years of working with him. Director Chapman has been a wonderful “teacher” and mentor to me and his other staff members, the school administrators and teachers.

For his dedication and for all the many hours of hard work Director Chapman gave to this community, we offer our sincerest appreciation and wish him the best in his retirement and future endeavors.

WHIZ Wednesdays good for learning

Haywood Junior High School students are now enjoying “WHIZ Wednesdays.” This program is a fun method for reinforcing TCAP skills. The special Wednesday programs began on November 14 and will continue every Wednesday morning for the duration of the school year.

WHIZ Wednesdays begin with a short video, which is channeled through each classroom television. The video is of Student Council members portraying news reporters and offering information and entertainment to motivate the students to want to read. Following the video, every student in the school is given a short reading passage with questions. The students who answer all the questions correctly will have a chance to win prizes.

Beta Club members see “Anne Frank” play

Members of the Haywood Junior High School Beta Club traveled to Memphis recently to Craigmont Middle School to see a play about Anne Frank, a 15-year-old Jewish girl who was a victim of the Holocaust. She was made famous by the publication after her death by her father of her diaries in which she wrote about her life the two years she and her family were in hiding from the Nazis in 1942-1944.

HJH students “Wild About Reading”

Haywood Junior High School Librarian Jerilyn Thornton has created a Safari scene, complete with two mounted lions, at Haywood Junior High to entice students to be “Wild About Reading” during the school’s annual book fair. Students can purchase books and other school-related items, such as computer games and posters, and the proceeds of the sales will be used to purchase books and other resources to expand the library’s offerings. Parents and other visitors are also welcome to visit before and after school hours to make purchases.

Speaker at HJHS explains lottery scholarship preparation

Felicia Orr, West Tennessee Outreach Specialist, with the Tennessee Student Assistance Corporation, spoke with eighth graders at Haywood Junior High School on October 24 and 25 to explain the importance of preparing themselves to become eligible for State financial aid including, grants and scholarships, student loans, and loan forgiveness.

Ms. Orr presented an interesting and informative program for the students as she covered various programs that are available to help with post-secondary school expenses, eligibility requirements of those programs, facts about the program awards, and how to apply for each of the programs.

Ms. Orr stressed the importance of beginning right now to formulate a plan that will help them qualify for financial aid. She emphasized the need to focus on grades and extracurricular activates and to sharpen their study skills to make the most effective use of their time.

Ms. Orr suggested that each student get their parents or family members involved in the early stages of the planning process and suggested visiting college campuses now and throughout the high school years to see what each has to offer.
