HJH artists create for collage competition

Haywood Junior High students recently created collages in their art classes, and five were named winners in a competition among the artists.

Staff members at the school judged the artwork, concentrating on several criteria set by art teacher Anita Rickman. Among those criteria were a pleasing, overall look; a definite title that stands out; variety of materials; five different types of paper; five three-dimensional items; the use of glitzy or glittery materials; and neatness.

Winners were Maggie Herron, first place; Drew Baggett and Dean Peterson tied for second place; and Katora Holmes and Katie Lewis tied for third place.

CSI – Haywood Jr. High Science Lab

A body skeleton is found. Was foul play involved? Coach Young’s seventh-grade science lab class set out to find the answer.

Evidence was gathered. Fabric and hair follicles were found under the nails. Fiber was also located in the mouth. There were fragments of fiber or cord gathered from the neck and clavicle area. Who did it? How was it done? What were the perpetrators wearing?

The class started the investigation. Suspects were narrowed down to three people. Forensic evidence was analyzed. Burn tests were conducted. Microscopic data on fiber and hair analysis was gathered and compared with information gathered during the previous week’s learning from a lab experience. The microscopic research revealed fiber clues, and the students conducted burn tests to conclude that a nylon rope was used to commit the crime. More fiber analysis and burn tests on samples collected from the mouth and nails revealed that the suspect was probably wearing wool. This narrowed the suspects to two. The final analysis came when hair was gathered and compared to that of the crime scene.

A murder was revealed. Forensic evidence gathered at the crime scene and compared with other evidence gathered from the suspects revealed the correct suspect. The investigation led to the apprehension of the murderer. The students were excited about this learning experience!

HJH students learn from community speakers

Local University of Tennessee Extension Agents Walter Durl (pictured) and Travis Wade paid a visit to the explorations classes of Nicole Bond and Pat Harwell at Haywood Junior High School in late September to talk to students about interview procedures, the importance of having a good attitude, and the various aspects of the extension service’s 4-H program. Students also learned about career opportunities with the extension service.

On October 8, Dr. Jack Pettigrew, a local physician, took time from his busy schedule to visit and talk with students in Nicole Bond’s class. Dr. Pettigrew explained to students the course of student they would need to complete to become a family doctor or to specialize in one of the many medical fields. He also shared with the students his love of being a small-town family doctor.

HJH students participate in mock job interviews

On Tuesday, October 7, Ms. Nicole Bond’s career explorations class at Haywood Junior High participated in mock job interviews. Mrs. Rebecca Jones, UT Martin, and Mrs. Dawn Key, Perkins coordinator for Jackson State Community College, conducted the interviews in the school’s library. These ladies graded the students on presentation, dress, poise, and responses to the interview questions. The students were required to wear business or business casual for the mock job interviews. Mr. Ray Clark, eight-grade computer teacher, videotaped the interviews. Anthony Prewitt and Thaddeus Matthews tied for first place. Caleb Glidewell received honorable mention. The two first place winners were presented with a $10 gift card to Wal-Mart and a certificate; the honorable mention winner was presented with a $5 gift card to Sonic and a certificate.

HJH students use natural materials to build shelters

Students in Mrs. Holly Pipkin’s class at Haywood Junior High were assigned a project to coincide with their reading of the book “Hatchet.” Each student constructed his/her own survival shelters based on the setting of the book using only natural materials. They turned out great, according to Mrs. Pipkin.
