HJH Student Council members
give back

It is 8:30A.M. on a cold, soggy Saturday
morning; the night after a big HHS football game. I know you are
thinking most kids are at home in the bed … right? NO! Haywood
Junior High Student Council members were giving up part of their
Saturday morning to help clean the football stadium for the
people who use the stadium for exercise. The exercisers were
very enthused to see young adults trying to make a difference in
their community. In only an hour and 15 minutes, the students
had filled all t10 garbage bags given to them by the
Brownsville-Haywood County Parks and Recreation Department.

Members of the HJH Student Council, Emily Wright
and Xavier Rogers, said that they could not wait until the next
community service project. Kelsey Byars said, “It feels really
good to give back to a community that has given so much to the
students at Haywood Junior High.”
Nicole Bond is the sponsor for the group.

HJH celebrates Homecoming

When Haywood Junior High School celebrated its
homecoming on September 29, nine girls were selected to serve in
the homecoming court: Amanda Lopez, Taylor Call, Mireya Pulido,
Cassidy Hendrix, Lindsey Long (8th grade queen), Abbey Morris
(7th grade queen), Kameron Tyus, Idalias Flagg and Teri Shaw.
Lindsey Long was crowned 8th grade queen, and Abbey Morris, 7th
grade queen.
The HJH Warriors football team had a really good
season this year, defeating Memphis Kingsbury, Fayette East,
Fayette West and Ripley. Some of the team’s strengths included
good offense, improved defense and a lot of team spirit.
Prior to the game, students had a great time at
the school’s Homecoming Dance on September 25.

HJH geometry classes design
“Gum Drop” bridges

On Friday, August 28, the students of Ms. Nicole
Bond’s eighth-grade geometry classes put to use their knowledge
of triangles and designed a gumdrop bridge. Each team designed a
bridge using no more than 12 toothpicks and 20 gumdrops. The
bridges had to span a distance of six inches. After the bridges
were designed, each team had to hook one end of a paper clip to
the center of the bridge and the other end of the paper clip to
a small plastic cup. Then each team dropped in one penny at a
time into the cup until their bridge failed. The pennies were
dropped in a distance of approximately one inch from the lip of
the cup.
The team that had the bridge design that
withstood the weight of the most pennies won. The winners from
second-period geometry class designed a bridge that withstood 61
pennies. Members of that team were Brook Haywood, Dustin Kirby,
and Keondria Muex. The winning team from fifth period Geometry
designed a bridge that withstood 57 pennies - Anna Jackson,
Michaela Lovings, and Makiya Maness. Who knew designing bridges
could be so fun and delicious!
