Brief Notes
Doris Battle, Editor

Welcome to a new year

It is my pleasure to welcome all Haywood County students to the 2008-2009 school year. As interim director, I realize the great responsibility our school system has in shaping the lives of the children. We hope all students have settled into their classrooms and are looking forward to a great school year.

As you may have heard, our system made AYP during the last school year, and we are proud of the administrators, teachers and students for their hard work. This is an ongoing challenge for us all, and you should know that our administrators are ever vigilant in doing what needs to be done to continue this trend in our schools.

I have visited all the schools this year and always enjoy seeing all the children at work and at play. It’s part of our job to provide not only academic training in our schools but also lessons in good behavior, social interaction, the arts, music, and athletics. Each school is providing healthy food choices and exercise opportunities for the students to promote a healthier lifestyle and opportunities to learn through hands-on experiences in many different areas. We want our schools to be a well-rounded learning experience for all children.

So, to all the students and their families, let’s join together for another year to give our children an exceptional educational experience. It’s the most important thing we can do for them and for our community.

HJH Warriors keeping up a winning tradition

The Haywood Junior High School Warriors, under the direction of Coach Mike Young and his assistant, Coach Shannon Burdick, are having once again a winning season. They played Munford in the Jamboree the first week of the season, beating them 32-0. During their second time out in Ripley, they came home with a shut-out – 22-0. The Warriors played for the third time this season at home against Covington on September 12, and came away with a winning score –24-22, albeit a close one. Next the Warriors will take on Munford again, this time in a regular season game on September 19, and they will be home again on September 26 to face Brighton. Homecoming is October 3 against Fayette East, and the last game of the regular season before playoffs will be against Fayette West in Fayette County. Games begin at 6:30 p.m.

AYP Day Celebration

Haywood Junior High School students and faculty enjoyed watching a movie, teacher-student competitions, and playing games on AYP Day. But by far, the best part of the day came when the performers of the Great China Circus from Sevierville, Tennessee, entertained the entire group. The Brownsville-Haywood County Arts Council paid for part of this entertainment through the organization’s Arts in the School program. They also enjoyed the day’s finale when Principal Donte Bradford and Assistant Principal Don Sims made a grand entrance into the school’s gymnasium on Sims’ motorcycle. The HJH theme for AYP Day: AWESOME! YOU PASSED!

Brown’s classes training ground for HHS band

Natasha Brown is in her second year as the band teacher at Haywood Junior High, and she is introducing her students to the world of musical instruments. Many of her students have never played an instrument before they came to her classes, but it doesn’t take long for her to have them marching to the beat of a new talent.

Brown, a graduate of Lane College with a bachelor of arts degree in music education, was in her Brinkley, Arkansas, high school band and the Lane College band. Although she played baritone in the bands, she can play most any instrument and delights in teaching her students how fulfilling it can be as a musician.

She has a total of 45 students in her seventh- and eighth-grade bands, and has them practicing their skills to prepare them to join the Haywood High School band after graduation from HJH.

Her eighth-grade band performs at HJH football games and their theme this year is “Oldies but Goodies.” They play old favorites “Proud Mary” and “Smoke on the Water” and offer a percussion feature at each show. Both bands will perform in Brownsville’s Christmas parade, and both will compete in the area Solo Ensemble competition this year. The eighth-grade band will also compete in an All-State contest. Last year the bands received 20 superior ratings and 18 excellent ratings in the competitions, and also marched and played in the Humboldt Strawberry Festival and earned a second-place overall ribbon.

Master Gardener and helpers enhance HJH front entrance

Haywood County Extension Service Director Walter Battle, who is also the instructor of the service’s Master Gardener classes, volunteered his time, along with the time of his children, Max and Paige, to enhance the front entrance flower beds at Haywood Junior High School. The pruning of the Crape Myrtles this fall will be the final touches that will make the landscape most attractive.

HJH Campus Day/Open House a success

Upcoming seventh graders and new or returning eighth graders had the opportunity to get an early peek at their school on Monday, July 31, at the first annual Haywood Junior High School Campus Day/Open House.

HJH Principal Dontye Bradford, her new assistant principal Don Sims, and faculty members welcomed the students and their parents with lots of activities and information. “Spend a fun-filled day with your child engaging in activities that will prepare him/her for the junior high experience,” Mrs.Bradford wrote to parents, inviting them to attend.

Teachers held sessions with the students and parents and talked to them about how to balance extra-curricular activities and school work, how to effectively use their textbooks, how to open locks, how to use the Internet for achievement, how to help with homework, peer pressure, time management, study skills, and TCAP preparation. The students were also invited to attend a fashion show and enjoy inflatable games, a water slide, a scavenger hunt, and seventh- and eighth-grade family competitions.
