HJH Warriors a
young team
HJH Warrior
Football Coaches
The Haywood
Junior High School Warriors are only a few games away from the
season’s end. Although Coach Young reported a young and
inexperienced team this year, he and his assistants, William T.
Grisssom and Ben Burleson, have worked hard with the players to
hone their gridiron skills. The 2006 Warriors are the defending
co-champions of the WTAC.
Learning about finance

Seventh-grade students in Merry Bond's business finance class at
Haywood Junior High School enjoyed a lively discussion recently
with First South Bank's Bob Bond about savings, investments, and
loans. The 12-week class is new to HJH, and Jane Jameson and Steve
Svebakken are also teaching it.
Art teacher wins ribbons at fair, inspires
students

Haywood Junior High Art Teacher Anita Rickman
received ribbons for two pieces of her artwork at the West
Tennessee State Fair in Jackson in September. “Grapes of Harvest”
(left) won a blue ribbon, and her “Just Picked” piece with a boy
holding a pumpkin received honorable mention. The theme for the
fair art show was “Harvest.”
Mrs. Rickman has been teaching in Haywood County
Schools for more than 30 years, and while she is an inspiration to
her students through her classes, her personal pieces must inspire
them also. Her students have completed collages this year and will
soon begin learning about the “basics” of drawing.

They also helped Mrs. Rickman create this colorful
fall arrangement that adorns the hall by the front door at HJH.
Neil Spencer electrifies HJH students

Neil Spencer of the Adventure Science Center in
Nashville entertained students at Haywood Junior High School
recently with his faced-paced interactive theatre presentation of
the greatest electrical scientists of all time. Students learned
about Benjamin Franklin, Allesandro Volta, Michael Farady and
Thomas Edison and their contributions to the field of electrical
science.

Following the Giants of Electrical Science Show in
the HJH gymnasium, Mr. Spencer spent time in the classroom with
Tamy Roland’s students as they were energized with a hands-on
exploration of electricity. Working in small groups, students
built their own electrical storage devices and created human
electrical circuits.
Funds for this special program came from Vision
Haywood County.
Dancing to success on AYP Day

Students at Haywood Junior High School rock to the sounds of
“A440” on AYP Celebration Day in the Haywood County School System.

Mary Jane Call, Haywood Junior High American
History teacher, was recognized by the local David Craig Chapter
of the National Society of the Daughters of the American
Revolution (NSDAR) as Outstanding Teacher of American History.
Mary Ann Shaw, Historian for the David Craig Chapter, made the
presentation.
HJH Campus Day well attended

Haywood Junior High School guidance counselor Janet Willis led a
discussion and answered questions about study skills and how to
effectively use the resources of the HJH library during group
discussions on Haywood Junior High School Campus Day/Open House on
July 31.
About 250 parents and students attended the Haywood
Junior High second annual Campus Day and Open House on July 31.
The purpose of this annual event is to give the incoming seventh
graders a tour of their new school. During the two-hour program,
students learned about classes and activities at the school,
lockers, and extracurricular opportunities.
HJHS Principal Dontye Bradford said, “I am thrilled
with the attendance and am encouraged to see so many mothers and
fathers escorting and supporting their children. All children need
to see that they have the backing of their mother, father, aunts,
grandmothers and other relatives and friends as the child takes
this important step in their educational and social development. I
am looking forward to a year filled with rewards and positive
learning experiences for our students and our faculty and staff.”
HJH Cheerleaders Attend Cheer Camp

Members of the 2007-2008 HJH Football Cheerleading squad are:
Captain-Paige Battle, Co-Captain-Sarah Lewis, Laura Gavin, Rachel
Johnson, Rachel Morris, Taylor Primrose, Candice Phillips, Maranda
Dempsey, Molly McAdams, Morgan Marlar, Kaitlyn Kasier, Madison
Eubanks, Itianna Shirley, Mary-Paige Hall, and Mary Drake Owen.
The 2007-2008 HJH Football cheerleaders attended a
four-day cheerleader camp on the campus of Middle Tennessee State
University. Universal Cheerleaders Association, a world-renowned
cheer organization, which provides hands-on training for
cheerleaders and coaches, sponsored the camp. The 4-day camp
provided the squad with the opportunity to learn the latest in
half-time routines, innovative stunts, dances, and crowd effective
cheers.
Ms. Bernice Thompson, HJH Cheerleader Sponsor,
stated that this camp was not only about learning new cheers and
stunts, but it was also an opportunity for 15 young girls to bond
and learn how work together as a team. “Teamwork is very important
because these young women will spend a lot of time together; they
practice after school a couple of days per week, they attend games
together, and other school functions. Cheerleading is a unique
combination of athleticism, entertainment, and student leadership.
This group of young ladies set the example as a group that
supports the school and acts as cheerleaders, not only for the
school team, but also for the entire school body,” Thompson said.
On the final day of camp, the squad had an
opportunity to perform routines they learned before an audience of
parents, family members, and friends. The squad took home first
place in the cheer division.
