Lewis and Teri Shaw crowned HJH Homecoming Queens

Haywood Junior High School celebrated
homecoming Tuesday night, September 30, and eighth grader Sarah
Lewis and seventh grader Teri Shaw received the Homecoming Queen
crowns. Others in the court were (from left) Jahni Boyd, Aaliyah
Bailey, Haley Moore, Lindsey Long, (Queens Teri Shaw and Sarah
Lewis), Katlyn Saxon, Ciera Woods, Mary Drake Owen, Molly McAdams,
and Morgan Marlar. HJH soundly defeated Fayette East for the
homecoming win.
HJH students welcome Lisa Carlton from FSB

Lisa Carlton from First State Bank spoke to
seventh-grade business finance classes at Haywood Junior High
School on September 23, regarding the “Basics of
Borrowing/Understanding Credit and Loans.” Teachers of these
12-week classes are Merry Bond, Jane Jameson, and Steve Svebakken.
AT & T manager speaks to junior high students

HJH students in Career Exploration classes enjoyed
a third speaker recently, Mrs. Janice Moore, who is a manager with
AT & T. She talked to students about her career, how to prepare
for an interview and gave them other information to help them when
they are in the job market.
The “Standards” entertain with music and a
message

The Haywood Junior High gymnasium was rocking to
the beat of the “Standards” last week when the group entertained
students with songs and a message about making healthy life
choices and not using illegal drugs. The five-member brother group
performed in most of the schools on Wednesday and Thursday,
September 10 and 11, and in concert at College Hill on Thursday
night. Helping with the expenses at several schools was the
Brownsville-Haywood County Arts Council with funds from its Arts
in Education program.

HJH announces art winners

In a recent competition among Haywood Junior High art students,
four received recognition as the winners. The project, 3-D Color
Wheels, was judged based on neatness, detailed items on the wheels
and use of space. Anita Rickman is the HJH art teacher. Winners
were 1st place, Caleb Potter; 2nd place, Maggie Herron; and 3rd
place (tie), Willie Franklin and Dean Peterson.
HJH Beta Club elects officers

Members of the Haywood Junior High School Beta Club recently
elected officers for the 2008-2009 school year. Selected were:
Sarah Lewis, president; Morgan Marlar, vice-president; Kaayla
Cunningham, secretary; Molly McAdams, treasurer; and Mary Drake
Owen, reporter. Sponsors for the club are teachers Mary Jane
Williams and Jane Jameson.
HJH classes enjoy Reggie Walker-

Haywood Junior High School students in Ms. Harwell,
Ms. Johnson, and Ms. N. Bond’s classes enjoyed a visit from
Reggie Walker, sportscaster with WBBJ Channel 7 in Jackson. He
spoke to eighth-grade Career Exploration classes on September 4.
Nichols speaks to HJH students

Nick Nichols, Community Bank President for First State Bank, spoke
to Haywood Junior High School students in one of the new
exploratory classes this year, “Career Exploration.” Math teachers
Pat Harwell and Nicole Bond were hosts to his visit where students
asked about careers in banking and other general business
information. “It was great,” Nichols said of the participation by
the students. He said they also discussed ethical behavior in
business and how to fill out a job application.

HJH welcomes students on Campus Day

Haywood Junior High School hosted its Campus Day
for students on July 29. Parents and students toured the school
and enjoyed learning about the school’s schedules, about time
management, getting organized for school and homework, study
skills and “How to help your teen do well.”

Other topics of discussion at the event were peer
pressure, making wise decisions, cyber bullying, yearly
recognitions, awards and incentives. Teachers and staff members
also talked about how to work the combination locks, athletics and
balancing schoolwork with athletics.
HJH celebrates new year

Haywood Junior High School seventh and eighth graders have settled
into their new classes, under the direction of Principal Dontye
Bradford. The school will expand its exploratory classes this year
to include a new science lab, civics and career exploration. There
are about 500 students at HJH.
