Vincent Harvell inducted into Lambuth Sports Hall of Fame

Vincent Harvell, who is the Director
of Business Operations for Haywood County Schools, was inducted
into the Lambuth University Sports Hall of Fame on October 28.
Originally from Nashville, he played basketball at Lambuth from
1973 to 1977 on a scholarship.

Harvell said he was really surprised by the honor. He and four
other inductees were honored at a breakfast during Lambuth’s
Homecoming 2006 activities.
He attended McGavock High School in Nashville, which he said at
the time was the largest high school in the state, and was proud
to be on the basketball team that had lots of good players from
which to draw. Although he had played on the team the previous
three years, in his senior year he was unsure whether to try out
for the team. But he did, and became the sixth man on the team.
Lambuth scouts recruited him, although, he said, they
were there to look at another player.
He played under Coach Charles Bray at Lambuth all four years,
and received All-Conference honors and MVP in his senior year,
playing all three positions, center, forward, and guard. His 6’5”
frame led him to score an average over the four years of 15.9
points and 9 rebounds a game.
Harvell earned a degree in accounting while at Lambuth which
eventually led him to Haywood County Schools four years ago.
Before coming to the Haywood County School System, he worked in
the Lauderdale County School System, and for the state department
of education as a fiscal consultant for schools in the Southwest
District.
“I actually have a lot of ties to Brownsville,” Harvell said.
His roommate was Terry Smith of Brownsville, and he played with
David Delk one year at Lambuth and with Ricky Delk for three
years. And Leslie Delk introduced him to his wife, Marie Morton
Harvell, also from Brownsville. The couple lives in Jackson, but
they attend church at St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church in
Brownsville. They have two daughters, one is a sophomore at Austin
Peay and the other is a junior at Jackson Central-Merry, and both
are basketball players.
Harvell says he is humbled by being selected for the Lambuth
University Sports Hall of Fame. “I never thought about this
happening,” he said. “It is a great honor.”
