Brief Notes
Doris Battle, Editor

Our appreciation goes to Director of Schools George Chapman

It is certainly fitting that the June 2008 “Notebook” should be dedicated to Director of Schools George Chapman. He has led our school system since 2000, overseeing many changes with the great leadership, wisdom and the utmost dedication to the children of Haywood County.

It has been under his direction that our schools met the challenge of the No Child Left Behind directives, succeeding in making this community proud of their hard work and successes. Under his direction we have expanded our curriculum to meet the needs of all the county’s children, and we have mounted a campaign of informing and uniting all citizens behind the local school system.

The job of Director of Schools is a monumental one, because there is nothing more important than our children. Director Chapman always kept that as his motivation and encouraged his staff to raise the bar to give our children an advantage in the world they must live in after school.

I have also appreciated my years of working with him. Director Chapman has been a wonderful “teacher” and mentor to me and his other staff members, the school administrators and teachers.

For his dedication and for all the many hours of hard work Director Chapman gave to this community, we offer our sincerest appreciation and wish him the best in his retirement and future endeavors.

Anderson students showcase talent at music and art show

Anderson Early Childhood Center students were proud to show off their work at the school’s annual music and art show in late April. Art students had their original works on display, including painted pieces and pottery bowls or fish, then the kindergarten students sang and joked their way into the hearts of their audience of family members and supporters. The theme, “Silly Songs and Jokes,” gave the children an opportunity to laugh and make their audience laugh. Some of the selections they presented were “Little Bunny Foo-Foo,” “I’m Being Swallowed by a Boa Constrictor,” “Rip, Rip, Rip Your Pants” (to the tune of “Row, Row, Row Your Boat”), and “Never Smile at a Crocodile,” from “Peter Pan.” The show’s printed program included the lyrics, and music teacher Ginger Cunningham said that some were going to enjoy singing these songs at home with their kids.

Entertainer thrills Anderson students with magic and song

Terry Hodges presented his “The Pro Kids Show” to Anderson students Thursday, April 26, and had them laughing and singing along and believing his message of “character counts.” He also used magic to bring his message home, including students and teachers in his act. This enrichment program was one of the school’s Family Friendly projects. Hodges presented two performances during the day and one that night for students and their families.
