Brief Notes
Doris Battle, Editor

Welcome to a new year

It is my pleasure to welcome all Haywood County students to the 2008-2009 school year. As interim director, I realize the great responsibility our school system has in shaping the lives of the children. We hope all students have settled into their classrooms and are looking forward to a great school year.

As you may have heard, our system made AYP during the last school year, and we are proud of the administrators, teachers and students for their hard work. This is an ongoing challenge for us all, and you should know that our administrators are ever vigilant in doing what needs to be done to continue this trend in our schools.

I have visited all the schools this year and always enjoy seeing all the children at work and at play. It’s part of our job to provide not only academic training in our schools but also lessons in good behavior, social interaction, the arts, music, and athletics. Each school is providing healthy food choices and exercise opportunities for the students to promote a healthier lifestyle and opportunities to learn through hands-on experiences in many different areas. We want our schools to be a well-rounded learning experience for all children.

So, to all the students and their families, let’s join together for another year to give our children an exceptional educational experience. It’s the most important thing we can do for them and for our community.

Arts at Anderson

Art students of Anderson Early Childhood Center were proud to put their talent on display at the school’s annual art show. Art teacher Beth Ann Smith worked with the students all year making various projects. She chose one drawing or painting of each child’s to be displayed, along with the students’ pottery creations. Kindergarten students created fish and Pre-K students created bowls.

Local educators present at Title I Conference

Four Haywood County educators were honored to be invited to present at the Annual West Tennessee Title I Conference held at the Pickwick Inn. From left, Anderson kindergarten teacher Nicole Henderson, reading coach Rita Matheny, Anderson Principal Mary Colling, and Teresa Russell, supervisor (not pictured), presented the newly implemented strategies for Anderson’s 90-minute reading block and intervention program. Each student at Anderson this year had an individual learning plan to address the areas that needed to be mastered to prepare the students for first grade.

Anderson students raise caterpillars to become beautiful butterflies

Insects have invaded kindergarten classrooms at Anderson Early Childhood Center! Specifically, Ms. Jennifer White’s class has been raising butterflies from caterpillars for the past month. Students studied the different stages of growth, from caterpillar to chrysalis to butterfly. They learned many facts about the needs of the caterpillars, including how their diet changes as they change and how they protect themselves from predators. Students also learned the differences between butterflies and moths, and examined books about many different types of insects. Students ended their study on May 2 by releasing the Painted Lady butterflies outside at school.

Anderson students perform Tennessee music

Music teacher Ginger Cunningham’s kindergarten classes on May 2 performed the “Tennessee-Sounds Good to Me” concert for their families. The students dressed up as famous Tennessee musicians and sang their popular songs. One young performer, the great-grandson of renowned Brownsville blues singer Sleepy John Estes, sang one of his great-grandfather’s songs.

Anderson students learn about Spring planting

Mrs. Angela Yoder’s Preschool class at Anderson is studying “Spring is for Planting.” The class learned how to plant flowers with the help of one of the student’s grandmother.
