Anderson students learn about the Indians and
Pilgrims

Mrs. Jerra Leek and Miss Jessie Carlton’s classes
spent the week of
Thanksgiving learning about the Pilgrims and the Indians. They
learned
that the Pilgrims came over on the ship Mayflower and were led by
Christopher Columbus. When they landed, they met the Indians who
taught them many ways to use corn. To complete their study on
Thanksgiving, the Indians (Mrs. Jerra’s class) had the Pilgrims
(Miss Jessie’s class) over for a Thanksgiving feast. Their feast
included beef stew, cranberry sauce, cornbread, and pumpkin bread.

Mrs. Hooser’s students become “Pilgrims and
Indians”

The students in Ms. Denise Hooser’s class at
Anderson had a great time learning about the First Thanksgiving
with the Pilgrims and Indians. “We read many books and sang songs
to learn how the Pilgrims and Indians became friends, planted
crops, and were thankful for a bountiful harvest,” Ms. Hooser
said.

To make this event real for the students, they made
Indian costumes to wear as they enjoyed their “feast” in the
cafeteria. Each costume was unique with Indian symbols drawn by
the students. They also picked out colorful feathers to decorate
their headbands to make the costumes complete. “The students were
so excited about wearing their costumes and ultimately learned
that they had a lot for which to be thankful,” Ms. Hooser added.

Sock Hop at Anderson was a blast!

On
October 31, girls in poodle skirts and pony tails, and boys
in blue jeans, penny
loafers and even a few leather jackets showed off their
newly-learned dance moves to musical hits both old and new.
Parents enjoyed watching their boys and girls dance the day
away.
Anderson students spent the month of October
learning a variety of dances in music and physical education
classes in preparation for the Sock Hop. Dances included the
Twist, Chicken Dance, Tooty-Tah, Mashed Potato, Macarena, Cupid
Shuffle, Hokey Pokey, Bunny Hop and more.
Anderson P. E. teacher Amanda Britt and music
teacher Ginger Cunningham coordinated this event, combining
their classes to teach the dances, and decorating the gym with a
1950’s theme. Ms. Ginger, in a huge pink beehive wig, helped
boys and girls dance on the stage during Sock Hop, while Ms.
Amanda was a super D. J., spinning the tunes.
Sock Hop is a much-enjoyed annual event for the
preschool and kindergarten students at Anderson.
Anderson students perform community service

The Brownsville-Haywood County Chamber of Commerce held its annual
membership banquet on November 13, and Anderson students provided
their artwork for the occasion.

The theme of the banquet was “patriotism.” Students in Mrs. Sylvia
Harwell and Ms. Allison Clinton’s classes lent their talent and
performed a community service by drawing patriotic placemats.
“Rhyming Bingo” reinforces skills

Krista Parker’s pre-kindergarten class at Anderson Early Childhood
Center has been working hard on second six weeks skills! They
studied rhyming, and everyone really loved playing rhyming bingo!
Le Bonheur to use Anderson student’s artwork

Le Bonheur Community Outreach held a competition in honor of World
Heart Day on September 28, and Ms. Phoebe Parker’s library classes
at Anderson participated in the contest by drawing "What you do to
have a healthy heart." Le Bonheur chose student Carmen Dew’s
drawing to use on their stationary, newsletters and other printed
materials. Carmen is in Mrs. Denise Hooser’s class. Pictured with
Carmen is Ms. Phoebe Parker.
Meet “Jolly Jack”

Jennifer White’s kindergarten class recently had some “inside”
experience with their position words. The students had fun carving
a pumpkin by first taking turns removing all the seeds. They also
voted on which design to use, ultimately choosing eyes above the
nose with a mouth beneath.
Krista Brown’s class learns about elections

Krista Brown’s class at Anderson learned about the
voting process and elections in November as everyone prepared to
vote for a new president. “We have learned some fun facts about
the presidential candidates to help us decide for whom we want to
vote,” Ms. Brown said. On Election Day, the students cast their
votes in our own private voting booth.

Police officers read to Anderson students

As a part of “Fight Crime: Invest in Kids
Tennessee,” an initiative to examine viable methods to keep kids
away from crime, Brownsville Police Chief Gill Kendrick and
Officer B. J. Raymond visited pre-kindergarten students at
Anderson Early Childhood Center to read “Officer Buckle &
Gloria.”
The book is about a police officer and his dog, Gloria, and
their visits to schools to talk about safety.
“We visit with a lot of students,” Chief Kendrick said, and
officers try to stay connected to the schools. “There’s no doubt
that cycles (of crime) exist, and we’re trying to break those
cycles.”
Anderson loves its Foster Grannies!

Anderson Early Childhood Center is truly blessed to
have such a wonderful staff at their school. In addition to the
full time faculty and staff at Anderson, there is a special group
of ladies who spends part of their day working with the children
at Anderson. They are known as the Foster Grannies. These ladies
are such a blessing to the teachers and children at Anderson.
Their job descriptions range from assisting the teachers in the
classroom during instructional time to tying shoes and giving
granny hugs! The faculty and students at Anderson love each granny
that works there.
October 10 was a very special day in Mrs. Julie
Carver’s class with three birthdays to celebrate. Logan Rushing,
Madison Campbell, and their very own Foster Granny, Mrs. Bettye
Norwood, were all born on this very special day! To help celebrate
this wonderful day Mrs. Bettye brought to school her Martin
guitar. She entertained the students by playing the student’s
favorite nursery rhymes and songs. The children sang along in
amazement as they watched Mrs. Bettye strum their favorite tunes.
Mrs. Bettye even shared some songs that she had written herself.
Mrs. Bettye is such a talented lady, and the students in Mrs.
Julie Carver’s class love her so much. She has a true love for
working with and spending time with the little ones at Anderson.
Anderson students learn about the letter “A”

The students in Mrs. Angela Yoder’s
pre-kindergarten class have been learning the letter “A,” and
Sarah Willis, one of Mrs. Yoder’s students, invited her
grandfather, Jerry Wright, to bring an ambulance to school. The
children enjoyed a tour through the ambulance and Mr. Wright
answered many questions about helping the sick. He also gave out
coloring books and a goody bag to each student.
