preschool and 5 by Sept. 30, 2008, to register for kindergarten.

It was a “Pie in the Face” success

A
nderson observed Dr. Seuss’s birthday by
celebrating reading throughout the day on March 3 when members
from the Brownsville community came and read to the students.
Everyone stopped what they were doing, and all the students and
faculty listened to readers in their classrooms at 10 a.m.

That afternoon there was an awards ceremony for the
4th six weeks skills. The students had been given the challenge to
read 1,000 books. If they met the challenge, the principals would
get a pie in the face. They met the challenge! The two students
who read the most books, Hannah Littlejohn and Luke Scrifes, threw
pies in the faces of Ms. Mary Colling and Mrs. Tracy Riddle.

Pamela M. Thomason Teacher of the Year

Pamela M. Thomason was chosen among her peers to be
the Anderson Early Childhood Center Teacher of the Year. She
teaches pre-kindergarten and is in her 28th year as a teacher in
the Haywood County School System. Mrs. Thomason holds a bachelor
of science degree in elementary education from Union University.
She serves on her school’s School Improvement Committee and is a
Mentor Teacher and Co-lead Teacher for Pre-K. She was also
selected as Building Level Teacher of the Year in 2003-2004.
Anderson art classes work with clay

Art students at Anderson had the opportunity to
experience being a potter as they learned how to work with clay in
Ms. Beth Ann Smith’s art class. Preschool and kindergarten
students formed and painted their pottery, with lots of great help
from parent volunteers and art room staff. About 50 parent
volunteers came to help the students
during the week of clay classes.

Preschool students each made a bowl, and
kindergarteners made fish with their clay. The pottery is
currently drying. When it is ready, Ms. Beth Ann will glaze each
piece and then bake them in a kiln to turn the clay into
stoneware.

The students’ works will be on display in a school
wide art show in late April. The art show will include one piece
of pottery and one work of art on paper for each student at
Anderson.

Anderson students learn to recycle

Mrs. Callie Adams’ pre-kindergarten class at
Anderson Early Childhood
Development Center has had a very busy last two weeks! On January
30, the boys and girls had a lesson in recycling. The children
learned that every day objects they use at home could be remade
into many more useful items, rather than be thrown away. The
students then sorted and separated paper, plastics, glass, and
aluminum. At the end of the
day, the boys and girls went home eager to encourage their
families to practice recycling.
Then, in February, Mrs. Callie’s class turned in
the most completed School Mall booklets of any pre-k class,
earning themselves a pizza party! The School Mall booklets are a
magazine-selling fundraiser that benefits the school.
Finally, Emmanuel Garrison, a student in Mrs.
Callie's class, won the grand prize in the School Mall drawing and
is now the proud owner of a remote-control robot.
