Brief Notes
Doris Battle, Editor

Welcome to a new year

It is my pleasure to welcome all Haywood County students to the 2008-2009 school year. As interim director, I realize the great responsibility our school system has in shaping the lives of the children. We hope all students have settled into their classrooms and are looking forward to a great school year.

As you may have heard, our system made AYP during the last school year, and we are proud of the administrators, teachers and students for their hard work. This is an ongoing challenge for us all, and you should know that our administrators are ever vigilant in doing what needs to be done to continue this trend in our schools.

I have visited all the schools this year and always enjoy seeing all the children at work and at play. It’s part of our job to provide not only academic training in our schools but also lessons in good behavior, social interaction, the arts, music, and athletics. Each school is providing healthy food choices and exercise opportunities for the students to promote a healthier lifestyle and opportunities to learn through hands-on experiences in many different areas. We want our schools to be a well-rounded learning experience for all children.

So, to all the students and their families, let’s join together for another year to give our children an exceptional educational experience. It’s the most important thing we can do for them and for our community.

Black History Month sparks special music lessons at Anderson

Students in music class at Anderson have begun to learn about the Blues, Gospel, Soul, and Rock-and-Roll music in honor of Black History Month. Under the direction of music teacher Ginger Cunningham, they are studying many famous musicians, such as BB King, Muddy Waters, Mahalia Jackson, Aretha Franklin, and of course, Brownsville natives Tina Turner and Sleepy John Estes.

The boys and girls enjoy listening and dancing to the music, and are even learning how to write their own “Blues” songs. Each class will learn what makes a song the “Blues,” and will then discuss things that can make them sad. They will create lyrics to express those feelings, while also examining how rhyming words can be used in song lyrics. As they practice their Blues song, the students discover how putting their feelings into a song can turn “sad” into “glad,” because the music can help them feel better.

Parents who would like to participate in the lesson can take their children to visit any of a number of museums in the area that have exhibits on area musicians. The home of Sleepy John Estes can be viewed at the Delta Heritage Center. There are many other fine displays of music and musicians from the West Tennessee area that can be found at the Delta Heritage Center and other area museums. Parents can also ask their children to tell them about the musicians they are studying in music class. You will be surprised at how much they remember!

Celebrating 100 Days

Kindergarten students at Anderson celebrated the 100th day of school by
having a carnival in the gym. Parent volunteers helped with all the games. Everyone had a great day!

100 T-shirts for 100 Days

Students in Mrs. Sylvia Harwell’s class celebrated the 100th day of school
by wearing “100” T-shirts.

Anderson students study the letter “F”

The Anderson Early Childhood Center Kindergarten students studied the letter “F” and Brownsville firemen became part of the lesson when they brought their truck and talked to the students about the equipment and their job.

Students earn cheers and awards

Anderson students stepped into the limelight recently in the school’s gymnasium when they accepted awards for their good work during the third six weeks. Many received awards for their classroom achievements as well as improvement and good behavior.
