Brief Notes
Doris Battle, Editor

Welcome to a new year

It is my pleasure to welcome all Haywood County students to the 2008-2009 school year. As interim director, I realize the great responsibility our school system has in shaping the lives of the children. We hope all students have settled into their classrooms and are looking forward to a great school year.

As you may have heard, our system made AYP during the last school year, and we are proud of the administrators, teachers and students for their hard work. This is an ongoing challenge for us all, and you should know that our administrators are ever vigilant in doing what needs to be done to continue this trend in our schools.

I have visited all the schools this year and always enjoy seeing all the children at work and at play. It’s part of our job to provide not only academic training in our schools but also lessons in good behavior, social interaction, the arts, music, and athletics. Each school is providing healthy food choices and exercise opportunities for the students to promote a healthier lifestyle and opportunities to learn through hands-on experiences in many different areas. We want our schools to be a well-rounded learning experience for all children.

So, to all the students and their families, let’s join together for another year to give our children an exceptional educational experience. It’s the most important thing we can do for them and for our community.

Haywood County Family Resource Centers’
“Family Reading Wall of Fame” Winners
By: Peggy Jackson

The Family Resource Centers are so proud of all the students who have participated in the “Family Reading Wall of Fame.” All students who participate receive ribbons for the schools’ award ceremonies. A continuous list is kept and trophies will be awarded to the top 10 students at each of the three elementary schools who read the most books for the school year. Our goal is to help our children know the fun of reading and work on their reading skills at the same time!

Congratulations to the top students for the fifth six-weeks! Anderson winners were: 1st place – Allison Elrod; 2nd place – Shadaesya Glover; 3rd place – Ellington Steel

The Family Resource Centers, located on the campuses of Anderson and Haywood Elementary, are a team effort of UT Extension and the Haywood County School system. All residents of Haywood County are invited to visit the Centers where hundreds of items are available for FREE loan.

Anderson Field Day 2007 T-shirt a hit

Again this year as Anderson Early Childhood Center students enjoyed their fun-filled “field days” in early May, they were proud to wear the “special” T-shirt that was designed for the occasion. Anderson student Acayla Palmer’s drawing was selected as the design for the 2007 Field Day shirt, and she models her design, along with Anderson Assistant Principal Drayton Hawkins and Anderson art teacher Beth Ann Smith. Mrs. Smith says the design is selected every year by teachers from among the school’s art students’ work. Acayla is the daughter of Angela and Billy Palmer
