School Board approves the 2010-2011 calendar

The Haywood County School Board met in regular session on Tuesday, March 9, and along with other business, approved the calendar for the 2010-2011 school year. School begins next year on August 2 for teachers, August 9 for students and ends on May 26. Students will again enjoy a week-long fall break, October 11-15; a two-week winter break from December 20-31; and spring break from March 21-25.

School board members also approved summer school dates of June 1-June 25, and approved out-of-state travel for AFJROTC students to attend a Drill Team Competition in Oxford, Mississippi, on March 26-27. The Tomcat baseball team was approved for a tournament trip to Alcorn County, Mississippi, on April 2-3.

Unanimous approval of the board was also given to a Resolution of Appreciation honoring the administrative and instructional support staff of the school system. This includes secretaries, bookkeepers and teacher assistants.

In other business, 10 $200 grants were approved for teachers in the system who submitted ideas for special projects or programs for their classrooms. Five East Side teachers received approval for their projects, including Tammy Oliphant, Shalondria Hardin, Leslie Essary, Rickesha Watkins and Miranda Jones. Anderson teachers Jessie Warren and Krista Brown received approval for their projects. At Haywood Elementary, April Horn’s program was approved. Sunny Hill teacher Denise Phillips received $200 for a center in her class, and at HHS, Delois Dailey will fund a project with her grant.

The next regularly scheduled meeting will be held on Tuesday, April 13, at 7 p.m.
