Brief Notes
Doris Battle, Editor

Welcome to a new year

It is my pleasure to welcome all Haywood County students to the 2008-2009 school year. As interim director, I realize the great responsibility our school system has in shaping the lives of the children. We hope all students have settled into their classrooms and are looking forward to a great school year.

As you may have heard, our system made AYP during the last school year, and we are proud of the administrators, teachers and students for their hard work. This is an ongoing challenge for us all, and you should know that our administrators are ever vigilant in doing what needs to be done to continue this trend in our schools.

I have visited all the schools this year and always enjoy seeing all the children at work and at play. It’s part of our job to provide not only academic training in our schools but also lessons in good behavior, social interaction, the arts, music, and athletics. Each school is providing healthy food choices and exercise opportunities for the students to promote a healthier lifestyle and opportunities to learn through hands-on experiences in many different areas. We want our schools to be a well-rounded learning experience for all children.

So, to all the students and their families, let’s join together for another year to give our children an exceptional educational experience. It’s the most important thing we can do for them and for our community.

School board to “call” budget meeting

When the Haywood County School Board met in regular session Tuesday night, July 10, they took care of several items, but had to put off budget approval – because it isn’t ready. Just like the city and county, the school’s budget cannot be set until there is a state certified tax rate, and, according to Property Assessor Dare Simpson, that has not yet been determined. Board members adjourned subject to call when they can finalize the budget.

In other business, board members adopted a yearly agenda, with a few changes, approved athletic practice at Haywood High School during regular school hours, declared about 30 computers as surplus, and reviewed and approved changes in all of the schools’ handbooks.

They also sent congratulations to seven retirees, including Ralph Cochran, with 32 years’ service, who served as Director of Adult Education; fourth-grade teacher Jane Hopkins with 29 years’ service; fifth-grade teacher Mary DeBell with 32 years’ service; Audrey Blue, seventh-grade teacher who had 42 years’ service; and at HHS, Peggy Haynes, 35 years; Alden Williams, 13 years; and Kay Cunningham, 37 years.

The opening in-service for faculty and staff will be held on Thursday, August 2, at Haywood High School at 8:30 a.m. The first day of class will be August 6. The next regularly scheduled school board meeting will be held on August 14 at 6 p.m.
