Welcome to a new year
It is my pleasure to welcome all Haywood County students to
the 2008-2009 school year. As interim director, I realize the
great responsibility our school system has in shaping the
lives of the children. We hope all students have settled into
their classrooms and are looking forward to a great school
year.
As you may have heard, our system made AYP during the last
school year, and we are proud of the administrators, teachers
and students for their hard work. This is an ongoing challenge
for us all, and you should know that our administrators are
ever vigilant in doing what needs to be done to continue this
trend in our schools. I have visited all the schools this
year and always enjoy seeing all the children at work and at
play. It’s part of our job to provide not only academic
training in our schools but also lessons in good behavior,
social interaction, the arts, music, and athletics. Each
school is providing healthy food choices and exercise
opportunities for the students to promote a healthier
lifestyle and opportunities to learn through hands-on
experiences in many different areas. We want our schools to be
a well-rounded learning experience for all children.
So, to all the students and their families, let’s join
together for another year to give our children an exceptional
educational experience. It’s the most important thing we can
do for them and for our community.

School Board June 12 Meeting The Haywood County School Board
met Tuesday night, June 12, to take care of year-end 2006-2007 budget
amendments and to approve a continuation budget for the upcoming
school year. They also recognized the top two seniors at Haywood High,
nominated a senior to serve in the student position on the State Board
of Education, and discussed preliminary Gateway test results.
Director of Schools George Chapman and board members welcomed HHS
Valedictorian Isaac and Salutatorian Allyssa Douglas to the meeting
and presented them with plaques honoring their academic achievement.
Each student also submitted letters of appreciation to the teachers
they felt had made the most impact in their lives. Olmedo selected HHS
math teacher Eddie Keel, and Douglas selected English teacher George
Norvell.
Board members also approved the nomination of Amy Olmedo as a
candidate for the student position on the State Board of Education.
This nomination was submitted to the state to be included in the
selection process.
Director Chapman asked board members for their permission to enter
into an agreement with Jackson State Community College to teach a dual
credit English course to Haywood High School seniors during the
2007-2008 school year. There is a tuition fee, but Jackson State has
made arrangements with the state to use lottery scholarship money to
cover this tuition for the students.
Director Chapman also reported on preliminary Gateway algebra and
English2/writing test projections, saying that if his figures were
correct, students scored well in both areas. This year they also took
a biology Gateway test and performed well on those, too.
Board members also agreed to approve a continuation budget for the
coming school year since Director Chapman and his staff are unable to
complete the budget without funding information from the state. State
legislators passed the increase in cigarette tax to substantially
raise education funding, but the State Board of Education has not yet
received the final figures and stipulations for the additional
spending. Chapman said that he expects to attend a meeting soon where
school directors and superintendents will receive this information so
they can finalize their budgets. Later in the meeting board members
approved budget amendments, and Director Chapman reported that the
schools’ income from their portion of the sales tax this year might
have reached an all-time high at $280,000.
At the end of the meeting, school board members recessed to conduct
a private meeting with Haywood Schools’ attorneys about two pending
lawsuits. One is an EEOC complaint made by a former employee, and the
other is the Title 9 Discrimination against Female Athletes suit
brought against the schools by several parents. These parents had
requested the school system to build a girls’ softball field on the
HHS campus. The board denied their request, but the school system
spent a considerable amount upgrading one of the fields at the
Methodist softball complex to meet the needs of the high school team.
The next school board meeting will be held on July 10 at 6 p.m.
