| Haywood County School Board sets 2007-08 calendar,
approves grants The Haywood County School Board met Tuesday
night, March 13, and in addition to setting the calendar for next
year, announced the recipients of Spring Mini-Grant Awards, set the
amount of money to be spent on Colhoun scholarships, and agreed on a
plan for surplus computers. They also updated several policies and
approved a request for the use of the John B. Hooper Memorial Stadium.
Board members approved the 2007-2008 school calendar, adding, this
year, several days to fall break making it a week instead of two days.
Teachers will begin school with an in-service on August 2-3, and
students’ first day will be August 6. Fall Break will be October 8-12,
Thanksgiving November 21-23, and Christmas December 18 (1/2 day)
through January 1. Teachers will return to school on January 2, and
students on January 3. Spring Break next year will begin with Good
Friday on March 21 and run through March 28. The last half-day for
students will be on May 23. Board members also approved the dates
for this year’s summer session as May 29 through June 22. Thirteen
teachers presenting special projects for their classes received $200
mini-grants from the school board.
Four Anderson teachers received awards. Sylvia Harwell will
purchase “Read and Spell with INSTA-LEARN,” and Julie Carver will
provide her children with a Spirit CD/Cassett Powered Listening
Center. Tonya Madere will purchase “Learning to Read is a Snap II,”
and Jill Blackburn will use the money to put a Literacy Center in her
class. At Haywood High School, Linda Baxter will use her funds for
her Water Education Team (WET), Gail Chapman will purchase dry erase
boards for everyone, and Gay Thomas will purchase “Work Smarter Not
Harder.” Beth Crider’s mini-grant will purchase a “Senior Memory Book
Project.” HHS teachers Gay Thomas, Eddie Keel and Jimmy Goodman at HHS
will use their grant money to purchase “Leave No Math Skill Behind.”
Kenneth Emerson and Lois Ferrell at HHS will purchase “Riding above
the Pit Falls using Geometry.” With graduation in May fast
approaching, board members were asked to set a monetary limit on how
much of the Catherine Colhoun Scholarship Fund will be used this year
for scholarships. Last year the school gave nine awards, five to
students and three to teacher assistants. This year they will award a
total of $20,000 in scholarships. Haywood County School leaders also
agreed to accept a proposal from Millennium Technologies to handle the
disposal of the system’s outdated and surplus computers.
In other business, the board approved a request from the Haywood
County Relay for Life Committee to use the football stadium for their
annual event on June 8. The next school board meeting will be held
on April 10.
