Welcome to a new year
It is my pleasure to welcome all Haywood County students to
the 2008-2009 school year. As interim director, I realize the
great responsibility our school system has in shaping the
lives of the children. We hope all students have settled into
their classrooms and are looking forward to a great school
year.
As you may have heard, our system made AYP during the last
school year, and we are proud of the administrators, teachers
and students for their hard work. This is an ongoing challenge
for us all, and you should know that our administrators are
ever vigilant in doing what needs to be done to continue this
trend in our schools. I have visited all the schools this
year and always enjoy seeing all the children at work and at
play. It’s part of our job to provide not only academic
training in our schools but also lessons in good behavior,
social interaction, the arts, music, and athletics. Each
school is providing healthy food choices and exercise
opportunities for the students to promote a healthier
lifestyle and opportunities to learn through hands-on
experiences in many different areas. We want our schools to be
a well-rounded learning experience for all children.
So, to all the students and their families, let’s join
together for another year to give our children an exceptional
educational experience. It’s the most important thing we can
do for them and for our community.

School board re-elects Gruenewald as board chairman

At the September 11 Haywood County School Board meeting, board
members re-elected Patricia Gruenewald to serve as chairman and Harold
Garrett to serve as vice-chairman this year. They also took action on
several school and travel requests, approved policy changes, and
discussed attending the Tennessee School Board Association Convention
(TSBA).
Director of Schools George Chapman brought requests from East Side
and Haywood Elementary to spend beyond the allowable amount from the
internal school account on playground equipment and upgrades. The
expenditure at Haywood Elementary was money donated by the school’s
PTA. The board approved both requests.
They also approved a travel request from HHS Career and Technical
FCCLA Advisor Pam Diebold to take student Ladrecus Shepard to
Washington, D. C. for USA Leadership training from September 28
through October 4. Ladrecus is serving as the FCCLA state president.
Michelle Tillman, Choral Director at HHS, received approval for the
Show Choir to travel to Orlando, Fla., from April 3-6, 2008, to
participate in a choral competition.
Board members also discussed attending the TSBA Convention in
Nashville November 10-11. Joe Barden, Pearlie Hess and Robbie Jarrett
King will serve as delegates to the Delegate Assembly.
The next school board meeting will be held on October 9 at 6 p.m.
