Welcome to a new year
It is my pleasure to welcome all Haywood County students to
the 2008-2009 school year. As interim director, I realize the
great responsibility our school system has in shaping the
lives of the children. We hope all students have settled into
their classrooms and are looking forward to a great school
year.
As you may have heard, our system made AYP during the last
school year, and we are proud of the administrators, teachers
and students for their hard work. This is an ongoing challenge
for us all, and you should know that our administrators are
ever vigilant in doing what needs to be done to continue this
trend in our schools. I have visited all the schools this
year and always enjoy seeing all the children at work and at
play. It’s part of our job to provide not only academic
training in our schools but also lessons in good behavior,
social interaction, the arts, music, and athletics. Each
school is providing healthy food choices and exercise
opportunities for the students to promote a healthier
lifestyle and opportunities to learn through hands-on
experiences in many different areas. We want our schools to be
a well-rounded learning experience for all children.
So, to all the students and their families, let’s join
together for another year to give our children an exceptional
educational experience. It’s the most important thing we can
do for them and for our community.

Haywood Schools hold “Camp Invention”

Forty-two Haywood County students
participated June 25-29 in Camp Invention 2007 held at East Side
Elementary. This is the third year for the program that challenges
children to create, work together as teams, and develop science
literacy and inventive thinking skills. At the Inventor’s Showcase
program on Friday, students told parents about the camp’s different
activities, and at the end, picked up their “inventions” to take home.
For the third year, Haywood County elementary students were
challenged with hands-on activities that foster creativity, teamwork,
science literacy and inventive-thinking skills when they participated
in Camp Invention 2007. Abby Hooper served as Camp Director, and Amy
Harris and Michelle Welch were the teachers for the program. Serving
as counselors were Anna Baumheckel, Payne Hall, Dee Pilant and Emily
Pilant.

The top priority of the Camp Invention Program is to provide
quality enrichment activities for children entering first- through
sixth-grades. An inquiry-based program offered to your local school
district, participants’ understanding of science, math, history, and
the arts is enhanced as they participate daily in five
activity-oriented thematic modules.

The program runs for one week from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. daily, and
each day, 42 students rotated between five thematic modules that build
upon what was learned the previous day. The program’s integrated
curricula align with national and state educational standards and are
taught by certified teachers from the local community.
This summer’s program included inventing a method of futuristic
travel in “Wild Blue Y’Under,” exploring engineering principals to
build communications command centers in “Tape Me To Your Leader,” and
investigating a make-believe crime scene in “Solve It: The Missing
Inventor’s Log.”
Every year, children participate in “I Can Invent/Take Apart”
during which they take apart discarded household appliances and create
new inventions, while learning about the patenting process. They also
participate each year in “AMAZing Games.”
Sponsors for the event were United States Patent and Trademark
Office, Roadway Express, USF Holland, InSouth Bank and Wal-Mart.
