Brief Notes
Doris Battle, Editor

Welcome to a new year

It is my pleasure to welcome all Haywood County students to the 2008-2009 school year. As interim director, I realize the great responsibility our school system has in shaping the lives of the children. We hope all students have settled into their classrooms and are looking forward to a great school year.

As you may have heard, our system made AYP during the last school year, and we are proud of the administrators, teachers and students for their hard work. This is an ongoing challenge for us all, and you should know that our administrators are ever vigilant in doing what needs to be done to continue this trend in our schools.

I have visited all the schools this year and always enjoy seeing all the children at work and at play. It’s part of our job to provide not only academic training in our schools but also lessons in good behavior, social interaction, the arts, music, and athletics. Each school is providing healthy food choices and exercise opportunities for the students to promote a healthier lifestyle and opportunities to learn through hands-on experiences in many different areas. We want our schools to be a well-rounded learning experience for all children.

So, to all the students and their families, let’s join together for another year to give our children an exceptional educational experience. It’s the most important thing we can do for them and for our community.

East Side students learn from “Ag Day”

The Haywood County University of Tennessee Extension Office, under the direction of Walter Battle, coordinated an agricultural learning experience for East Side Elementary students on May 9 with “Ag Day 2008.” All booths focused on types of farm products, harvesting and processing practices and nutritional values of foods. The booths also provided local information about the products.

From the Extension office, Peggy Jackson displayed and shared with the children different types of fruit.

Sharon Sparks taught the children about grains and cereal, teaching them the differences in the breads they eat every day.

Walter Dirl gave students information about meats and poultry.

The students really had a wonderful time “milking” a cow at a booth where they also learned about other Haywood County crops from Extension Agent Tracey Sullivan. Helping Mrs. Sullivan was Haywood County Schools Coordinated Health Program Director Sharon Thornton.

Also assisting in the day were members of the Haywood County Master Gardeners Club. They displayed for the children some of the vegetables that are grown in Haywood County and treated them to a cup of salad mix.

HHS Future Farmers of America students assisted with the equipment tours, program set-up and disassembling. The children really enjoyed the big red and green tractor and combine provided for the day by Tennessee Tractor and Willie German Equipment. 4-H Horse Project members assisted agents with photographs and teaching. The Haywood County Farm Bureau and the UT Extension Tennessee Nutrition Consumer Education Program provided funding for the Ag Day program.

East Side teachers “taste” appreciation

In honor of Teacher Appreciation Week, East Side Elementary Principal Tammie Canada and Assistant Principal Yvette Blue recruited Pam Diebold’s culinary students at Haywood High to prepare a special meal for their teachers. Chefs (from left) Luther Ward, Jasmine Pirtle and Ladrecus Shepard, all seniors at HHS, served and offered the teachers a choice of delicious Chicken Alfredo, spaghetti or lasagna, complete with a salad, cheese biscuits and dessert.

Arts Council provides “Arts in Education” program at East Side

East Side students enjoyed on April 30 the catchy tunes, colorful characters and comic style in the Arts Council-sponsored production of “Wilhelmina Millicent’s World of Imagination.”

Starring in the play were actors Virginia Ralph (as Liza) and Lindsey Stanfill (as Willie Millie) from Voices of the South in Memphis.

The Brownsville-Haywood County Arts Council sponsored an Arts in Education program on April 30 for students at East Side Elementary. The production, “Wilhelmina Millicent’s World of Imagination,” a musical play presented by Voices of the South from Memphis, is an adaptation of children’s poetry written by native southerner Dana Berbette of Madison, Mississippi.

The play welcomes the audience into the crazy, mixed-up world of Willie Millie. As the play unfolds, the characters learn new life lessons about respect, personal boundaries, feelings, and friendship. With catchy tunes, colorful characters, and broad comic style, “Wilhelmina Millicent’s Wonderful World of Imagination” steals your heart.

The local Arts Council works to bring educational, entertaining programs to each school in the county. Through the Arts in Education programs, local children are exposed to life lessons for everyday living.

East Side 5K promotes good health

East Side Elementary School and the Haywood County Schools Coordinated Health Director Sharon Thornton held their first 5K run/walk on Saturday, April 19. The weather was gorgeous and the turnout of both children and adults was great, according to East Side Principal Tammie Canada. “The purpose of the event was to promote being healthy and active,” Canada said.

East Side art teacher Linda Mann held an art competition for the race’s T-shirt design. Ms. Mann had them draw “What it meant to be healthy.” The winner was Hannah Kizer.

“The race was organized as a healthy fundraiser for the school and to
help raise awareness of how to be healthy in Haywood County,” Mrs. Thornton said. “We were very pleased with the turnout and the support the community has shown.”

There was a tie in the race of classroom participation. Torre Kelley and Jennifer Licata’s classes were the winners with the same amount of students in each of their classes participating. The classrooms received a “Dance, Dance Revolution” game along with a Playstation as their reward.
