East Side earns SACS accreditation
Four area educators visited East Side Elementary
School in November to observe and evaluate the school’s programs
for the SACS (Southern Association of Colleges and Schools) Review
Team Evaluation process, and the school was awarded accreditation.
The school was commended for having technology
integrated into daily learning experiences and for being “the
cleanest school the team had visited” as well as being safe. The
team reported that parent and community involvement is evident and
on-going, and that they had never been to a school where parents
spoke so highly of the school and its staff. The team also
congratulated the administration, faculty and staff for being a
caring school for all students.
According to Principal Tammie Canada, SACS team
members gave the school two recommendations for improvement.
“East Side will work to collaborate with feeder
schools to ensure student success and to analyze subgroup test
data in all subject matter,” Canada said. “East Side’s motto is ‘A
Great Place to Learn,’ and we feel that this review supports that
motto.”

East Side students “Elect to be Drug Free”

East Side Elementary students learned from the
Police Department’s Drug Unit for Meth when it visited the school
to kick off Drug Awareness Month. Ms. Flodine Hudson and her
committee, Catherin Lester, Minnie Reed, Ragan Baumheckel, and
Monica Johnson, worked diligently to prepare a month of activities
for the students. This year’s theme is “We Elect to be Drug Free.”

Among the activities was a classroom poster
contest. Among the winners in third grade were: 1st place – Ms.
Grammer’s class, 2nd place - Mrs. Gibbs’ class, and 3rd place Miss
Aggreh’s class. Fourth grade winners were: 1st place – Ms.
Samantha Davis’ class, 2nd place – Mrs. Miranda Jones’ class, and
3rd place, Mrs. Lee Ann Garrett’s class. School Board members
Pearlie Hess, Daniel Thornton and Robbie Jarrett-King judged the
competition.
These board members will also judge entries in a
Drug Awareness Essay Contest after the October 21 deadline.
Fitness Fun!

Maria Hart’s fourth-grade students used a rainy
day to exercise during their recess recently with an exercise
video that she checked out of the Teacher Resource Center in the
school’s library. Their goal was to burn energy and calories and
have a good time.
Students at work …

A stroll around East Side Elementary gave a roving
photographer a look at what students were doing in their
classrooms. Some were studying symmetry or building a story, while
others were writing shape poems and scarecrow stories. The
photographer also saw posters that displayed what students were
learning about “nouns,” butterflies, layers of the earth, and
Tennessee’s Grand Divisions. Last but not least, she saw creative
displays of seed collages. There’s lots of learning going on at
East Side!
