African Mask designs honor Black History Month

East Side Elementary students in Linda Mann’s art
class created African Masks in honor of Black History Month in
February. Mrs. Mann said all the masks are tribal. Students
performed research to find examples to use to create their own
masks. Mrs. Mann also had a “Shoo Fly Quilt” hanging by her door.
These quilts were used to mark safe houses during and after the
Civil War.
Teachers, students perform at East Side Talent
Show

Sonny and Cher??? (It's really Anna and Tim Roberts
sharing their talents at the East Side talent show.)
East Side Elementary music teacher Emily Brandt organized a talent
showcase at the school on February 16. Teachers, students and
others performed to a packed house, standing-room-only crowd that
thoroughly enjoyed the event. It seems Ms. Brandt put in lots of
extra hours to audition and rehearse with those who were in the 40
acts that performed. The event was part of the school’s Family
Friendly February. E. W. James also donated to the event hotdogs
and buns and roses for each contestant.
Opera Memphis performs Black Roots Opera

Opera Memphis came to East Side Elementary School
on February 17 to perform “Black Roots of Opera: The Story of
Marian Anderson.” Eight students participated in the program by
providing the history of Ms. Anderson. Two musicians from Opera
Memphis performed for the student body as they celebrated Black
History Month through the enriching genre of opera.
